U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly said Tuesday that he wants Representative Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA-14) to become “more involved” with the House Republicans on the heels of a “productive meeting” the two shared last week.
According to journalist Jordain Carney, who reports for German-owned Politico, Johnson told reporters on Tuesday that he and Greene discussed her role in the next Congress during a meeting held last week.
“We talked about her role, and her skill set and her potential that she brings to the table,” Johnson reportedly said Tuesday, according to Carney. The speaker added, “I want her to be more involved.”
Both Johnson’s meeting with Greene and the speaker’s comments about her future role in the House followed the unanimous nomination by Republicans for Johnson to continue serving as the House Speaker.
Greene told The Hill that Johnson was the only candidate, acknowledging she voted for the Louisiana Republican just six months after her effort to remove him from leadership was successfully tabled by a bipartisan majority of Congress.
Reportedly describing the meeting as “productive,” the Georgia Republican also cited Johnson’s willingness to enact Trump’s agenda.
“The American people overwhelmingly voted for President Trump’s agenda, not anyone else’s agenda, President Trump’s agenda, MAGA agenda, America First agenda,” Greene reportedly said. “I think whoever’s in charge here in the House, their job is to pass President Trump’s agenda.”
Johnson confirmed his commitment to Trump’s mandate in a Tuesday press conference after he was questioned about those nominated to cabinet positions by the president-elect.
“I think President Trump is looking for persons who will shake up the status quo, and we got a mandate in this election cycle to do that,” said Johnson. “The status quo is not working for the American people, and so these are people who will go in and bring real reform, and significant reform to the agencies that they lead. If you poll the American people, they will agree that is an appropriate objective.”
The speaker’s implied endorsement of Greene’s abilities comes just years after she was stripped of her committee assignments under former Representative Kevin McCarthy, who served as Speaker of the House when 11 House Republicans joined Democrats in the successful vote in response to her social media posts.
Greene later became an ally of McCarthy, opposing the successful effort by Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL-01) to oust McCarthy from leadership, culminating in Johnson’s successful nomination as the current speaker.
