Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) plans to table the impeachment articles against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas next week after senators are sworn in as jurors.
“What we’re hearing is for the first time ever in our nation’s history, Chuck Schumer is wanting to table the impeachment articles. Every American should be incensed by this,” Blackburn said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Features.
Blackburn went on to explain how nearly 10 million illegal aliens have crossed the border into the nation illegally under the Biden Administration, noting how Mayorkas should be forced to stand for his impeachment trial under the U.S. Constitution.
“Alejandro Mayorkas has lied to Congress. He has repeatedly said that the border is closed. It is not. He is doing Joe Biden’s bidding on this. Every single state is affected by this. He should stand for his impeachment trial as instructed by the Constitution of the United States,” Blackburn said.
Blackburn said the issue of immigration is the top among American voters and said it will be “interesting” to see what plays out in the Senate once the articles of impeachment are sent over from the House on April 10.
The House voted 214-213 to impeach Mayorkas on February 13 for his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and breach of the public trust.
Moments after the impeachment articles passed the House, Blackburn said she would vote to convict Mayorkas if “given the opportunity.”
Blackburn’s Sunday appearance on Fox News came days after the senator returned from visiting the U.S.-Mexico border where she met with Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven C. McCraw, President of the National Border Patrol Council Brandon Judd, members of the Texas National Guard, and local ranchers.
“After taking office, President Biden issued 94 executive actions in the first 100 days to open up the southern border, which has resulted in over 9.2 million illegal border crossings,” Blackburn said in a statement following her visit. “In Texas, I saw firsthand how Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Department of Public Safety have stepped up to secure our border, which President Biden refuses to do. I also heard from border patrol, local law enforcement, and ranchers about the humanitarian and national security impacts of Biden’s border crisis.”
“The message is clear – instead of suing Texas to keep the border open, Biden needs to return to the successful policies of the Trump administration,” Blackburn added.
