Live from Music Row Friday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed Nashvillian and MAGA Rapper Bryson Gray in studio to talk about moving from liberal-leaning North Carolina to conservative Tennessee.
Leahy: I am joined in studio by what I’m going to say is probably the best, most prominent MAGA rapper in America. Bryson, is that a fair statement? Are you the most prominent MAGA rapper in America today?
Gray: Yeah, that’s a fair statement. Most infamous would also be a fair – the most infamous MAGA rapper? Yes.
Leahy: Are you the only MAGA rapper?
Gray: No, they’re lots of them.
Leahy: Well, we are honored to have the most infamous MAGA rapper in America in studio today. Now you were talking off-air. The last time you were in a hip-hop studio, they kicked you out because you were a MAGA rapper.
Of course, you can’t have a MAGA rapper in a hip-hop studio, apparently. It’s been a while. What’s similar and what’s different about being in a studio in a conservative talk radio program?
Gray: The studio setup there is pretty similar. I miss it. I got that vibe, that classic vibe. The real difference is you haven’t it kick me out yet. (Laughter)
Leahy: I’m not kicking you out, man. I’m watching my tone.
Gray: It’s much more fun this time.
Leahy: Good! We like to have fun. We like to have fun. Now, you grew up in High Point, North Carolina. Your career started there. You’ve decided, however, and you made a great choice, I’d like to know why though, in your mind, you made this choice.
You moved from North Carolina to what I’m going to say, the greatest state in America. State income tax-free, with lots of friendly people, lots of talent. You moved to Tennessee, and you live in Murfreesboro. Why did you make that move?
Gray: Because North Carolina is going further and further left, thanks to Roy Cooper.
Leahy: He’s the Democrat governor.
Gray: Yes, sir. I had the means to say, okay, let me try to go to a more conservative state instead of complaining about my own state. I feel like if I can’t do anything here, I need to move to a more conservative place. A lot of people will pick Florida and Texas, but a lot of liberals are moving to those places. So I said I want a conservative state but I don’t want the liberals. (Chuckles) I felt like Tennessee was my best option. Not to say there aren’t any liberals here, but all I’m going to say is riding around meeting people, this is a more conservative-friendly place.
Leahy: Even the liberals that are here, they’re liberal and they’re lunatics, but they’re slightly more polite, I think. (Gray chuckles) Has that been your experience or not?
Gray: Yes. My experience here so far has been amazing. We walked in Target and people noticed us in Target. Who we were.
Leahy: Really? No, no, no, no, no, No. Your girlfriend smiling and saying, yeah, that really happened. So walk me through. So here you are now. Right now you’re wearing a hoodie that says Patriots Versus Everybody.
Gray: Yes, sir.
Leahy: And it’s a red hoodie. And then you’ve got a blue and white blue hat. America First.
Gray: Yes, sir.
Leahy: Walk me through your walk into Target and how people saw you and recognized you.
Gray: People usually recognize me because I usually wear a bucket hat. So whenever I walk out with a bucket hat …
Leahy: What is a bucket hat?
Gray: It’s a fisherman hat. Yeah, this is like a fisherman hat. And I’m known for wearing the red fisherman hat.
Leahy: Really? I’ve learned something. (Gray chuckles) I’ve learned a new term. And so you’re known for that?
Gray: Yeah.
Leahy: You’re like a celebrity-type guy in studio with me. Wow!
Gray: I’m not a celebrity.
Leahy: You’re known. Let me just say when I walk through Target, nobody comes up and says, oh, I know who you are.
Gray: I’m sure they notice you about your voice because you have a very distinct and a very radio voice. It’s like you were made for radio.
Leahy: I have, as they say, a face for radio. (Gray chuckles) But go ahead. Which Target did you go into?
Gray: It’s the one in Murfreesboro.
Leahy: Okay, so you go to Murfreesboro Target and you’re wearing your bucket hat.
Gray: Yes.
Leahy: Your red bucket hat.
Gray: And I forgot what shirt I had on. Was it impeach Biden shirt?
Leahy: (Gray laughs) That obviously going to get a lot of – Where’s my impeach Biden shirt? I’m gonna go get one if you got it.
Gray: Get one. It’s not on my website, but it’s on Braden Taylor’s website.
Leahy: And so you’re walking around. And what happens?
Gray: As soon as we walk in it’s like, instantly, like somebody said, oh, I think that’s him. I think that’s him.
Leahy: Are you kidding me?
Gray: No, no joking. Then after we took pictures with them, 30 seconds later, a lady walked in and said, I follow both of you – talking to me and my girlfriend – I follow both of you. Oh, my goodness. I just want to hug you guys.
Leahy: Really?
Gray: Yes.
