Former President Donald Trump now holds a five-point lead over President Joe Biden in a head-to-head race in Arizona, a poll released Sunday revealed.
The CBS News/YouGov poll found 52 percent of Arizonans would vote for Trump if the election were held today, compared to 47 percent who said they would vote for the Democratic incumbent.
When Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein was included by pollsters, Trump polled at 44 percent, Biden at 40 percent, and Stein at 5 percent. An additional 10 percent of voters said they were unsure or would vote for another candidate.
The state of the economy was identified to pollsters as the primary issue going into the 2024 elections, with 82 percent of respondents calling it a major factor in determining their vote.
Inflation ranked as the second major factor, listed by 78 percent of respondents. The U.S.-Mexico border was the third major factor identified to the pollsters, mentioned by 61 percent of respondents.
Though just 51 percent of Arizonans surveyed told pollsters abortion was a major factor, the survey found 65 percent of respondents would approve an amendment to the Arizona Constitution “to establish the constitutional right to an abortion” within the state.
However, the poll’s findings may cast doubt on Democrat hopes that abortion will energize liberal voters in November, as just 44 percent of Arizona respondents said recent developments regarding abortion made them more motivated to vote in the 2024 presidential election.
A total of 68 percent of respondents additionally told pollsters the Biden administration is “[t]oo easy on immigrants trying to cross the border,” while 23 percent said they approve of Biden’s border policies and 9 percent said his administration is too harsh on illegal immigrants.
Seventy-one percent of respondents said it would be better for Arizona to see less illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
While the poll offered good news for Trump, it may spark concern for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, who is likely to face Representative Ruben Gallego (D-AZ-03) in the election to fill the seat being vacated by Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ).
The pollsters found Lake is behind 13 points in the race against Gallego among likely voters, with 36 percent indicating they plan to support the Republican compared to 49 percent who plan to support the Democrat. Pollsters said 10 percent of respondents were not sure and 5 percent planned to vote for someone else.
Lake recently challenged Gallego to a debate on abortion, but reported the Democrat’s campaign immediately declined her offer.
Pollsters surveyed 1,510 Arizona adults, including 1,214 registered voters, between May 10-16. They reported a margin of error of 3.3 percent for the full survey and 3.5 points for responses including only registered voters.
