Former President Donald Trump appears well positioned to claim a primary victory in Georgia over his declared and potential rivals for the Republican nomination.
Trump took 50.7% support among likely Republican voters in a recent University of Georgia survey. Coming in second was Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who took 29.8% support despite not having announced his candidacy.
Trump’s declared rivals did not fare as well, with former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley earning 4.0% while former Arkansas Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson earned just 0.4% support.
Former Vice President Mike Pence and former Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney each claimed 2.3% support. Neither have officially declared their candidacies.
Conducted between April 2-7 and 10-12, the survey questioned 983 likely Republican voters in Georgia and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1%.
The Peach State is a key battleground in both the primary contests and the general election. Trump won the state in 2016 over democratic nominee Hillary Clinton but lost it in 2020 to President Joe Biden.
