DHS Rescinds Protected Status for over 500,000 Haitians

The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem this week rescinded the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians by 18 months.

TPS “is a temporary immigration status provided to nationals of specifically designated countries that are confronting an ongoing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or extraordinary and temporary conditions,” according to the American Immigration Council.

Before President Donald Trump took office, the Biden administration’s DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas decided to extend Haitians’ TPS in June 2024. Mayorkas extended it to February 3, 2026.

“We are providing this humanitarian relief to Haitians already present in the United States given the conditions that existed in their home country as of June 3, 2024,” said Mayorkas. “In doing so, we are realizing the core objective of the TPS law and our obligation to fulfill it.”

However, the new date the TPS for Haitians will end is August 3. In 2011, DHS estimated that 57,000 Haitians were eligible for TPS. By July 2024, approximately 520,694 Haitians were eligible for this program.

During this time span, Haitians eligible for TPS went up by 813 percent.

“Biden and Mayorkas attempted to tie the hands of the Trump administration by extending Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status by 18 months—far longer than justified or necessary,” a DHS spokesperson said.

“We are returning integrity to the TPS system, which has been abused and exploited by illegal aliens for decades. President Trump and Secretary Noem are returning TPS to its original status: temporary,” the person added.

During the Biden administration, Haitians were spread to small towns throughout America. For example, Springfield, Ohio, took in between 12,000 and 20,000 Haitians from  2021 and 2024.

Springfield, which has an estimated population of 58,082, saw its shoplifting and vehicle thefts going up as more Haitians came into the small town, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Trump, while campaigning for president, said he would end Haitians TPS status.
