The Conservative Political Action Coalition (CPAC), the nation’s oldest conservative grassroots organization, appointed Ohio State Representative Brett Hillyer (R-Uhrichsville) to serve on its National Prosecutors and Law Enforcement Advisory Council.
The press release details that in this position, Hillyer (pictured above) will work with other council members to develop best practices and policy recommendations to boost public safety through conservative justice system reforms.
According to Hillyer, he is committed to public safety through the justice system and is excited to work with esteemed colleagues nationally.
“One of my legislative priorities is ensuring widespread public safety through the lens of our justice system. I am honored to serve on this council and work with esteemed colleagues from across the nation,” Hillyer said.
As a lawmaker, Hillyer has championed legislation to minimize public defender and prosecutor shortages, changing the law regarding the involuntary treatment of mentally ill persons subject to a court order.
Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hill) applauded Hillyer’s appointment, saying he has much to bring to the table.
“I am excited to see Ohio represented on this important council. Representative Hillyer is an expert on our criminal justice system and has a lot to bring to the table,” Stephens said.
The Conservative Political Action Coalition chose five lawyers from different regions of the nation to serve on this advisory committee. The National Prosecutors and Law Enforcement Advisory Council comprises law enforcement leaders with federal, state, and local backgrounds. Through the council, these leaders collaborate to develop policies and practices that promote public safety.
In addition to being an individual accomplishment, Hillyer’s appointment to the council elevates Ohio to the forefront of the nation in terms of justice system reform. Ohio House Republicans anticipate Hillyer’s appointment to this position will benefit public safety in Ohio and elsewhere.
The Ohio Star contacted Hillyer and The Conservative Political Action Coalition for comment on this appointment but did not receive a reply before press time.
Hillyer is serving his third term in the Ohio House of Representatives. He also serves as the Civil Justice Committee chair in the House. Before this, he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Akron and a Juris Doctor from Ohio Northern University. He began private practice in 2011 at the Law Firm of Connolly, Hillyer & Ong and, in 2016, became an agent for Ohio Bar Title and Commonwealth Title. In 2013, voters elected Hillyer as Uhrichsville City law director and prosecutor.
Hillyer counseled West Lafayette, Freeport, and Roswell villages in addition to his legal practice. Hillyer also volunteers his time for the Uhrichsville Clay Museum, the Tuscarawas County Business Factory, and the Dennison Rotary.
