Tennessee GOP U.S. Representatives Vote to Impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas

Mayorkas Impeachment

All eight Tennessee Republican U.S. Representatives were among the majority of members that voted “Yes” on two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday.

Tennessee U.S. Representatives Diana Harshbarger (R-TN-01), Tim Burchett (R-TN-02), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN-03), Scott DesJarlais (R-TN-04), Andy Ogles (R-TN-05), John Rose (R-TN-06), Mark Green (R-TN-07), and David Kustoff (R-TN-08) all went on record voting in favor of the impeachment bid (H. Res. 863) against Mayorkas, which passed the House by a 214-213 vote.

The two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas came as a result of a year-long, five-phase investigation into the border crisis – which included 10 full and subcommittee hearings, transcribed interviews of chief and deputy chief patrol agents, and five interim reports totaling nearly 400 pages – by the House Homeland Security Committee, which Green chairs.

Green applauded the vote on Tuesday, saying, “Congress has taken decisive action to defend our constitutional order and hold accountable a public official who has violated his oath of office.”

“The House Committee on Homeland Security’s investigation and subsequent impeachment proceedings demonstrated beyond any doubt that Secretary Mayorkas has willfully and systemically refused to comply with the laws of the United States and breached the public trust,” Green added. “As a result, our country has suffered from an unprecedented border crisis that has turned every state into a border state, causing untold suffering in communities across our country. With this vote, Congress has made clear that we will not tolerate such lawlessness.”

Green further called on the Senate to address the border crisis by passing the Secure the Border Act (H.R.2), which passed the House and arrived in the Senate last year on May 15.

“We have put forward legislative solutions to the border crisis in H.R. 2, the ‘Secure the Border Act.’ We have now conducted oversight and held Secretary Mayorkas accountable. We will continue to fight on behalf of the American people to end this crisis. I urge the Senate to do the right thing and remove Secretary Mayorkas from office following a thorough trial,” Green said.
