As a proud Tennessean and a grassroots Republican leader with the Williamson County Conservatives, I am heartened by the bold leadership of Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, State Representative Lee Reeves (R-Franklin), and U.S. Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN-05) in their unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting our communities from the challenges posed by illegal immigration. Their recent actions, particularly in confronting Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s troubling stance on immigration enforcement, deserve our gratitude and support.
Our state has always prided itself on values like safety, community, and respect for the law. Yet, these principles are under threat when local leaders prioritize political posturing over the well-being of their constituents. Mayor O’Connell’s response to recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Nashville — operations that resulted in the arrest of nearly 200 individuals, many with criminal records — has been nothing short of alarming. By criticizing these lawful efforts and issuing an executive order to track and report federal immigration activities, O’Connell has signaled a dangerous willingness to obstruct federal law enforcement. This is not the leadership Tennessee needs.
Thankfully, we have leaders like Jack Johnson, Lee Reeves, and Andy Ogles who are standing up for our state. At a recent press conference, aptly titled “Stop the Invasion: Defend Tennessee,” these lawmakers made it clear that they will not stand idly by while Nashville’s mayor undermines the safety of our communities. Congressman Ogles has taken the fight to the national stage, announcing that the House Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees will investigate O’Connell’s actions to determine whether they constitute aiding and abetting illegal immigration or misuse of federal funds. This is a critical step toward accountability, and Ogles’ resolve to “not back down” resonates with Tennesseans who demand leaders who prioritize law and order.
Senate Majority Leader Johnson, a steadfast advocate for Williamson County, has consistently championed policies that protect our state’s sovereignty and security. His presence at the press conference underscored his commitment to ensuring that Tennessee does not become a sanctuary for those who break our laws. Likewise, State Rep. Reeves has been a vocal supporter of ICE’s efforts, rightly pointing out that when cities like Nashville refuse to cooperate with federal authorities, the consequences ripple far beyond their borders. Their unified stance sends a powerful message: Tennessee will not tolerate policies that put our citizens at risk.
The contrast between these leaders and Mayor O’Connell could not be starker. While O’Connell defends initiatives like the Belonging Fund — which, despite claims to the contrary, raises concerns about supporting illegal immigrants with taxpayer resources — Johnson, Reeves, and Ogles are focused on protecting Tennesseans. They understand that unchecked illegal immigration strains our schools, healthcare systems, and public safety resources. They recognize that allowing criminal elements to exploit lax enforcement endangers our neighborhoods. And they refuse to let Nashville become a “liberal hellscape,” as Ogles aptly put it, where gangs and traffickers find safe haven.
O’Connell’s actions, including his refusal to commit Metro Nashville Police resources to assist ICE, reflect a troubling trend of leftist policies that prioritize ideology over the safety of citizens. His executive order, which directs city agencies to monitor federal immigration enforcement, is a clear attempt to undermine ICE’s critical work. Such moves not only erode trust in law enforcement but also embolden those who seek to exploit our borders. Tennesseans deserve better — they deserve leaders who will stand with federal authorities to ensure our laws are enforced and our communities are protected.
The courage of Johnson, Reeves, and Ogles in calling out these misguided policies is a testament to their dedication to Tennessee’s values. They are not afraid to face the backlash from protesters or the criticism of those who would rather turn a blind eye to the consequences of illegal immigration. Their leadership is a beacon of hope for those of us in Williamson County and beyond who believe in secure borders, safe communities, and the rule of law.
As the federal investigation into Mayor O’Connell’s conduct moves forward, I urge all Tennesseans to rally behind Johnson, Reeves, and Ogles. Their fight is our fight — a fight to preserve the integrity of our state and the safety of our families. Let us stand with them to ensure that Tennessee remains a place where the law is respected, and our communities thrive.
