A conservative political action committee in Virginia released a new ad targeting Representative Bob Good (R-VA-05) on Monday, highlighting a video published in December that appeared to show Good repeatedly criticize former President Donald Trump after stating he would not make similar remarks in public.
The narrator of Virginians for Conservative Leadership PAC’s 30-second commercial declared, “For cameras, Bob Good says Trump’s okay,” but called him “two faced” and a “fake” in private, before cutting to the December video. The spot appears on a website dubbed “NoGoodBob.com” and lists a number of grievance the group has against the two-term House member.
Good claimed in the video, which was purportedly secretly recorded and was edited prior to its release, that Trump “might be the only person that can lose to Joe Biden if he’s the nominee, and I don’t criticize him,” after stating that he does not “say this publicly.”
Explaining his decision to endorse Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Good explained in the recording, “I can’t stand by and watch, and then regret, that we nominated Trump,” before lamenting the party “may well do it” regardless.
The PAC launched a website alongside the ad with the goal of “exposing the real Bob Good, who is just no good.”
It highlights five policy positions or votes by Good they claim are “bad for Virginia,” including when Good did not vote for a bill to impose a federal ban on red flag gun control legislation, his decision to vote against the National Defense Authorization Act of 2023, and his vote to oust former Representative Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker.
Similar arguments about Good were raised by his primary challenger State Senator John McGuire (R-Goochland) during his recent appearance on The John Fredericks Show.
McGuire argued to host John Fredericks, who is the publisher of The Virginia Star, that Good “hates Trump,” claiming Good “begged Trump for an endorsement” in 2022 before endorsing DeSantis less than a year later. McGuire noted, “He endorsed DeSantis before DeSantis even entered the presidential race.”
To Fredericks’ skepticism, McGuire also raised arguments in the interview that are similar to those made by the political action committee about Good’s vote to oust McCarthy.
“If you want to get rid of the Speaker, that’s fine, but why couldn’t you wait until after November 7?” McGuire argued, “They did it right before the Virginia elections, which told voters in Virginia that Republicans can’t govern, and we lost the Senate by 2,000 votes.”
The lawmaker has repeatedly highlighted his longtime support for Trump during his campaign, and a poll released by his campaign in December suggested that voters in Virginia’s 5th Congressional district could abandon Good for McGuire, should they learn of his conservative credentials.
