The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Friday unveiled a new advertisement targeting Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein in battleground states, including Pennsylvania, condemning the independent presidential candidate for her lack of regret over former President Donald Trump’s victory in 2016.
A DNC press released said the ad targeting Stein will broadcast in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, as well as on national cable stations. Stein’s campaign submitted its signatures to qualify for ballot access in Pennsylvania in June.
Broadcast with a stamp of approval by Vice President Kamala Harris, the ad makes the case that “Stein was key” to Trump’s victory in 2016, and her candidacy in 2024 is evidence the progressive is “not sorry she helped him win.”
Democrats’ claim that Stein was responsible for Trump’s victory was repeated by the party and its spokesman throughout the press release, with the party declaring, “Stein handed the White House to Trump, and she has no regrets about it. In fact, she wants to do it again.”
DNC Senior Advisor Mary Beth Cahill noted Trump previously joked about Stein’s candidacy, noting that her voters are drawn “100 percent” from his opposition.
“Just like in 2016, Jill Stein can’t win the presidency, but she will help decide who does,” stated Carhill. “Donald Trump knows that she’s his key to the White House — that’s why he praises her spoiler candidacy and why his MAGA allies are working to prop up her campaign.”
In their press release, the DNC added that Stein was called a spoiler after the 2016 election when her vote totals in battleground states exceeded the margin of Trump’s victory over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The party noted that Stein won 132,000 in the “decisive swing states” where the ad will broadcast. They added that Trump’s victory margin “was just 77,000 votes in those same states.”
This was the case in Pennsylvania, where Trump received 2,970,733 votes, and Clinton received 2,926,441, giving the Republicans a 44,292-vote victory.
Stein received 49,941 votes, meaning that if every Green Party voter cast a ballot for Clinton, she could have won the Keystone State.
The Democrats’ decision to focus on Stein’s third-party candidacy comes after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attacked the party for what he called attempts to defeat his independent campaign with legal action to keep him off the ballot in key states.
“They’re suing me all over the country to try to keep me off the ballot,” said Kennedy, adding that “highly politicized judges” were granting favorable preliminary rulings to the Democrats.
Kennedy initially ran as a Democrat but later relaunched his campaign as an independent, arguing the DNC denied its voters the opportunity to decide whether Biden should be the party’s nominee. He has now endorsed Trump.
