Former President Donald Trump announced that he would be arriving in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention as scheduled on Sunday less than 24 hours after surviving an assassination attempt at a campaign rally.
Just after 2:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, Trump announced on Truth Social that while he was going to delay his trip to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, he decided that he was not going to allow a “potential assassin” to change his schedule.
Trump wrote, “Based on yesterday’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and The Republican National Convention, by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a “shooter,” or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else. Therefore, I will be leaving for Milwaukee, as scheduled, at 3:30 P.M. TODAY. Thank you!”
The former president added in a follow-up post, “UNITE AMERICA!”
Trump’s announcement comes the day after he was grazed by a single bullet in his upper right ear in what appears to be a failed assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Minutes after Trump took the stage in Butler at approximately 6:13 p.m. on Saturday, a suspected shooter – who has since been identified as 20-year old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania – fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the venue.
Crooks, who shot and killed one spectator and injured three others including the former president, was fatally shot by Secret Service personnel.
Trump was quick to thank law enforcement’s “rapid response” to the shooting and offer his condolences to the families of the three other victims of the shooting.
“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country,” Trump said Saturday evening.
Trump added in a Sunday morning post, “Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening. We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness…In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win. I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”
