Ohio lawmakers expressed universal support for former President Trump following an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The FBI has identified the suspected shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The attack resulted in the death of former fire chief Corey Comperatore and critically injured two others before Crooks was killed by the U.S. Secret Service. Trump suffered a grazed bullet to the ear and was taken offstage after the shooting.

U.S. Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) issued a strong statement immediately after the shooting, “Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

Vance received swift backlash for the statement from Democrats who labeled the criticism of the Biden campaign as unfair.

Vance later reposted a statement from Trump where he said , “we will FEAR NOT” Vance captioned it, “Courageous, United, and Defiant. This is leadership.”

Republican Governor Mike DeWine said, “Fran and I are praying for President Trump, his family, and our country.”

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) (pictured above, left) declared, “There is no place for political violence in our democracy. It’s completely unacceptable.”

Candidate for U.S. Senate Bernie Moreno (pictured above, right) said “God saved President Trump tonight so that he could save this Country.”  Moreno also called for Senator Brown to his prior statement “saying President Trump and his supporters should ‘pay the price.”

Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH-04) posted, “God bless President Trump. Pray for his safety.”  He later posted the following quote from Trump:

In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win.”
