Rep. Haley Stevens Jumps into Michigan Senate Race

Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI-11) announced Tuesday that she is running for Senate in 2026.

“It’s official, Michigan. I’m running to be your next United States senator. Michiganders are the hardest working people I know,” Stevens said. “We built this country and the middle class, and I’m running to have their backs in Washington. Let’s get to work.”

In her announcement video, she discussed her Michigan upbringing and the work she did in the Obama administration to help bring back the American automotive industry after the 2008 financial crisis.

She also discussed the recent American tariffs from Liberation Day. She cited higher costs for groceries and housing as a result of the tariffs.

“Donald Trump has a much different plan for Michigan. His chaos and reckless tariffs are putting tens of thousands of Michigan jobs at risk,” Stevens explained.

Stevens’ decision to jump into the Michigan Senate race did not come as a surprise. CNN reported earlier this month that she met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in March.

This Senate seat came open after Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) said he wouldn’t seek reelection.

After Republican Mike Rogers announced his candidacy for Michigan Senate, Stevens said he would not win the race.

“Mike Rogers sold out Michigan to get rich and will do nothing to stand up to Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s chaos,” she said on X. “Michigan rejected him once and we will do so again next year.”

This will be Rogers’ second time running for the Michigan Senate seat. He lost to Senator Elissa Slotkin by less than 20,000 votes.

This 2024 Senate race saw almost $143 million spent on it.

After announcing her Senate run, Stevens said this race “could be the most competitive race” next year.

The Cook Political Playbook rates the race for Michigan’s open Senate seat as a toss up.

Stevens joins health official Abdul El-Sayed and State Senator Mallory McMorrow (D-Detroit) vying for the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s Senate race.
