Tennessee U.S. Representative Scott DesJarlais (R-TN-04) was appointed chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces on Tuesday.

The Strategic Forces Subcommittee is one of seven subcommittees within the House Armed Services Committee.

DesJarlais was a member of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee during the 118th Congress, which at the time was chaired by former U.S. Representative Doug Lamborn (R-CO-05), as well as a member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces.

In welcoming DesJarlais and other new subcommittee leadership, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL-03) stressed the “crucial task” the committee carries in “building the ready, capable, and lethal force our nation needs to deter our adversaries.”

“I look forward to working with President Trump to accomplish that goal,” Rogers said.

DesJarlais said it was a “privilege” to serve in the capacity as chairman of the subcommittee.

The Subcommittee on Strategic Forces has jurisdiction over Department of Defense and Department of Energy policy related to “strategic deterrence, strategic stability, nuclear weapons, strategic and nuclear arms control, non-proliferation, nuclear safety, missile defense, and space; Department of Defense programs and accounts related to nuclear weapons, strategic missiles, nuclear command and control systems, Department of Defense intelligence space, space systems and services of the military departments, and intermediate and long-range missile defense systems; and Department of Energy national security programs and accounts.”

DesJarlais is the only representative from the Tennessee congressional delegation serving on the House Armed Services Committee during the 119th Congress, according to the committee’s updated roster.

The Tennessee congressman’s appointment as chairman of the subcommittee marks the beginning of his eighth term in Congress representing the Volunteer State’s 4th Congressional District.
