John Reid, the former Richmond radio host who is now seeking the Republican nomination to serve as Virginia’s next lieutenant governor, said on Monday that Governor Glenn Youngkin paved the road for Republicans to “step up” and prevent Democrats from taking back control in 2025.
Reid made the remarks while appearing as the guest host on the Monday broadcast of “The John Fredericks Show,” when he first explained his decision to enter politics began with the riots, election protests and COVID-19 policies pursued by Democrats in 2020 and 2021.
“When push came to shove in 2020, and in 2021 in a different way, we reverted right back to the worst behavior that had been demonstrated in the past,” said Reid of the country’s willingness to debate ideas. “Don’t try to lie to me and tell me you don’t think anybody would ever cheat because you know that’s not true. There there are people who will always cheat if you give them a chance to, and we’ve created a system in America where people have an opportunity to cheat.”
Reid added, “So don’t be surprised if we find out that’s the case. We need to close those loopholes. No one’s really interested in it.”
The Virginia Republican seemed to suggest tide began to reverse nationally after the 2021 elections in the commonwealth, when voters elected Youngkin, as well as Attorney General Jason Miyares and Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, who are all Republicans.
With Youngkin unable to seek a second consecutive term, he has endorsed Earle-Sears to become Virginia’s next governor. Miyares is seeking reelection.
“Glenn Youngkin miraculously became the governor of Virginia,” Reid said. “He’s vetoed hundreds of bills that are horrible, horrible leftist bills that would really, tax and burden individual citizens, oppress their freedom.”
Reid added, “I’m so thankful for Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears, who will be our nominee for governor this year, and Jason Miyares, our great Republican attorney general. I mean, they’re fighting back the best they can.”
Despite the reprieve from governance by Democrats, the conservative said Virginia needs to elect Republicans who will stop trying to appease Democrats and focus on pushing policies through the General Assembly.
“I think we’ve gotta have some people in this state who are gonna stand up without trying to, you know, bridge the gap between people who were 100% wrong,” said Reid. “I’m gonna stand up for what I think we as conservative Republicans believe. And that is why I quit the radio show across town.”
Reid, who is openly gay and in a long-term relationship, previously argued that he is uniquely poised to reach voters who stopped considering Republican candidates due to concerns over alleged homophobia among conservative voters.
He is currently slated to face Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity and business consultant John Curran in the Republican primary on June 17.
