Marsha Blackburn Unleashes on Colin Kaepernick

U.S. Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn held nothing back in a new column this week, describing Colin Kaepernick as “a spoiled brat football player” and his left-wing supporters as “self-absorbed” and lacking toughness. Blackburn made these comments in a new column on Breitbart this week. Kaepernick reportedly persuaded Nike to drop a planned Betsy Ross Flag sneaker. “Well, who would ever have thought that a spoiled brat football player would have a problem with an American flag that was first made by one of our founding mothers in 1776?” Blackburn wrote. “Sounds like someone needs a little flag education on what that symbol of freedom actually stands for to millions of people, not only in America, but also around the globe.” Blackburn said “it is time for the self-absorbed to understand a little bit about who continues to defend that freedom and protect their free speech so that they can say such inane things and continue to make millions of dollars.” Blackburn also said “those who complain about an American flag being on a pair of shoes could not fight like a soldier if they had to.” She went on to say “those who are complaining about this don’t have the mental toughness…

Arizona Drops Nike Investment After Betsy Ross Shoe Is Scrapped

by Molly Prince   Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey revealed Tuesday that the state of Arizona will withdraw all of the financial incentives provided to Nike following the company’s decision to pull an American flag-themed sneaker it deemed offensive. “Today was supposed to be a good day in Arizona, with the announcement of a major [Nike] investment in Goodyear, [Arizona],” Ducey said on Twitter. “And then this news broke yesterday afternoon.” And then this news broke yesterday afternoon. 2/https://t.co/NmM8OPGR0G — Doug Ducey (@DougDucey) July 2, 2019 “Words cannot express my disappointment at this terrible decision. I am embarrassed for Nike,” he continued. “Nike is an iconic American brand and American company. This country, our system of government and free enterprise have allowed them to prosper and flourish.” Air Manufacturing Innovation, the Nike subsidiary that makes Nike Air sneakers, announced plans to open a multimillion-dollar facility in the Grand Canyon state only hours before news broke that Nike was recalling Air Max 1 USA sneakers because a Revolutionary War-era version of the flag was stitched on the heel. The already-produced shoe line was pulled after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick complained that the Betsy Ross flag was a symbol of the…

Wisconsin Legislators Spent Two Days Debating About Colin Kaepernick

Wisconsin legislators spent Tuesday and Wednesday arguing over whether or not ex-NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s name should be included in a resolution honoring Black History Month. According to The Capital Times, the Wisconsin Legislature’s Black Caucus had included Kaepernick’s name in a ceremonial resolution, which honored African Americans who have “made measurable differences in their respective communities.” Republicans objected to his inclusion on the list, and instead put forward an alternative resolution that didn’t include his name. That resolution, which ultimately passed along party lines, replaced Kaepernick with the state’s first black lieutenant governor and first black secretary of state, among others. “The Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus unanimously agreed upon the names to honor in our resolution. It is beyond disappointing and offensive that Wisconsin Republicans are choosing not to respect the leadership of Wisconsin’s Legislative Black Caucus on this issue,” Rep. Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) said. State Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) criticized her Republican colleagues for telling “the entire country” that a “white Republican legislator” is “best suited to decide for African Americans what we should value, who we should honor.” “You don’t have to understand. It’s not your lens. It’s not your story. It’s ours. Who are you to…

Mississippi Police Ban Nike Products After Nike Endorses Colin Kaepernick

by Grace Carr   Mississippi state police won’t be able to purchase any Nike apparel or products after an announcement from the commissioner of public safety. “As commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, I will not support vendors who do not support law enforcement and our military,” Commissioner Marshall Fisher said in a statement, USA Today reported Sunday. The announcement comes after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick tweeted out a picture of Nike’s new campaign ad on Sept. 3. Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem in August 2016, sparking a trend in national sports where players kneel during the anthem rather than standing and placing their hand on their heart. It aired shortly before the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. https://twitter.com/Kaepernick7/status/1037387722107830272 Fisher has the right to prohibit business “with a company that pays an individual who has slandered our fine men and women in law enforcement,” said Mississippi GOP Gov. Phil Bryant in a statement of support, according to USA Today. The Department…

Will the University of Tennessee Review Its Nike Deal in Wake of Colin Kaepernick Controversy?

When the University of Tennessee shifted its apparel and shoe contracts from Adidas to Nike three years ago, there was an enthusiastic embrace of the new gear from athletes and fans alike. That deal was extended last year by then Athletic Director Dave Hart. But the Nike deal was not without some controversy, as the Nike brand experts were a big factor in the University deciding to drop the Lady Vols logo and implement a “branding restructure.”   Fans forced a reversal of that decision, in part thanks to some pressure from the Tennessee legislature. Now, a new controversy has arisen for Nike and the University of Tennessee with Nike embracing the controversial and unapologetically anti-National Anthem/American flag and chief kneeler Colin Kaepernick in a new ad campaign for the company. Protests and calls for boycotts have dominated social media in the wake of Nike’s announcement of their new deal with Kaepernick. Fox Sports Radio host Clay Travis has dubbed the Nike decision the “dumbest move” in the brand’s history and pointed out that the decision had cost Nike about a $3 billion loss in market cap based on stock trading Tuesday morning after the announcement. Currently, the University of…
