City of Memphis Gives Away Car in COVID Vaccine Sweepstakes

The City of Memphis, in partnership with a nonprofit, gave away a car as part of a COVID-19 vaccination sweepstakes. The winner was announced on Thursday.

According to the sweepstakes page, the maximum value of the car could’ve totaled $30,000. The winner had a choice between a Chevy Camaro, Chevy Colorado, Nissan Rogue, Nissan Altima, or any similar vehicle of equal or lesser value.

The city began the contest at the beginning of May, and issued a promotional video in addition to their press release to market it. The “Shot for Shot Sweepstakes” had over 24,000 entries.

The Tennessee Star inquired with Memphis government spokespersons how much the city invested into the giveaway. They didn’t respond by press time.

Shelby County is administering the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The CDC is holding an emergency meeting this week concerning both of those vaccines – there have been increasing reports of heart inflammation among vaccine recipients. The types of heart inflammation – myocarditis and pericarditis, which are typically rare reactions – have occurred in vaccine recipients at twice the anticipated rate. The cases have primarily affected individuals under the age of 30.

CDC Immunization Safety Office Deputy Director Tom Shimabukuro expressed confidence that many of the reported cases were preliminary in nature, meaning that they wouldn’t completely qualify as true heart inflammation upon further investigations. The CDC meeting is scheduled for Friday.

The same day that the CDC announced its emergency meeting, Moderna filed to expand its emergency use authorization (EUA) of the COVID-19 vaccine to children and teens aged 12 to 18.

To date, Shelby County has administered over 650,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. 45,000 of those doses were administered in May. Per the 2019 census, the county’s population totals just over 930,000.
