Elon Musk’s xAI Buys $80 Million, 1 Million Square Foot Property in Tennessee to Expand AI Facility for Grok

The Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce and xAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) company owned by Elon Musk, announced on Friday the company’s purchase of an $80 million, 1-million-square-foot building in Memphis, Tennessee, to expand facilities for its Colossus supercomputer, which is reportedly set to become the largest in the world.

A press release by the Greater Memphis Chamber announced the acquisition by xAI, which it said is part of Musk’s effort to expand on its Colossus supercomputer project in the southwest part of the city.

Study: AI and Data Centers Could Drive Cost of Energy Up by 70 Percent over 10 Years

The average American’s energy bill could increase from 25% to 70% in the next 10 years without intervention from policymakers, according to a new study from Washington, D.C.-based think tank the Jack Kemp Foundation.

According to reports, America is facing an energy crisis, with demand for energy soaring due to the proliferation of AI and hyperscale data centers, which can use as much energy as almost 40,000 homes;  the boom in advanced manufacturing, and the movement toward electrification.

Wyoming Sues Biden Administration over Fossil Fuel Ban

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been chipping away at the oil, gas and coal industries ever since President Joe Biden took office. Wyoming is an energy state that produces half the nation’s coal, as well as part of its oil and gas output. Since the federal government owns nearly half the state’s land, virtually all oil, gas and coal operations in the Cowboy State are heavily impacted by every rule the BLM throws at fossil fuels.

Although the Biden administration is waging war on fossil fuels, Wyoming is fighting back. The state, along with Utah, filed a lawsuit against the agency last Tuesday over its restoration lease program, and Rep. Harriett Hageman, R-Wyo., is rolling out legislation to fight back against the BLM’s proposed ban on federal coal leases.

New Data Centers Set to Stress U.S. Electric Grid Further

For the past couple of years, assessments of the national electric grid’s ability to deliver power during peak demand periods, such as heat waves and cold snaps, have shown increasing risk for blackouts.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation, the nation’s grid watchdog, finds the main cause is retirements of coal plants without enough natural gas plants coming online.
