Arizona AG Silent as Deadline Nears to Respond to Allegations of Misappropriation of Phoenix Taxpayer Funds

The Goldwater Institute (GI) sent a letter to Attorney General Kris Mayes recently demanding to know whether the City of Phoenix illegally gave at least $28.5 million of taxpayer funds to over 100 private organizations with little to no oversight. The letter was prompted by an investigation conducted by State Representative David Marshall (R-Snowflake), along with State Representative Quang Nguyen (R-Prescott) and State Representative Walt Blackman (R-Snowflake), who initiated a back-and-forth exchange with city officials about the alleged wrongdoing.

“This effectively turns large portions of the city’s budget into a patchwork of slush funds that special interests can access in the sole discretion of a single city employee,” GI said in an article about the subsidies.
