The President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Nashville has been suspended by the group for allegedly undermining the organization’s principles.
“The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) President/CEO Derrick Johnson has suspended former NAACP Nashville Branch president Venita Lewis for actions that under mind [sic] the mission and work of the NAACP. Her behavior provided cause for the suspension and her membership removal from the organization,” said a statement from the NAACP Tennessee State Conference.
“This statement is being issued because of the recent allegations made by Ms. Lewis against the organization and the NAACP State Conference leadership. We want to ensure that our members and the public know that we would not allow anyone to cause harm to our members or perpetuate mistruths about the actions of our members,” the statement said. “It’s important that our membership and the public know the NAACP’s position. We will continue to focus on advancing the rights and concerns of people of color in the state of Tennessee and support the advocacy work of the Nashville Branch NAACP.”
The statement made no specific mention of what Lewis did to earn the suspension, but WSMV reports that it was due to “unacceptable conduct which included name-calling, swearing and on at least one occasion calling a member after midnight on a non-emergency matter.”
Lewis (pictured above) compared the NAACP’s leadership to a “dictatorship.”
“If you’re a president and you’re not operating to her dictatorship you just get ousted,” Lewis reportedly said. “I’m not the first. It’s been going on.”
“I want to let you know in a real dictatorship that I’m getting ready to do an investigation on you,” she said. “I’m going to talk to staff and I’m going to talk to board members, and executive members then we’re going to talk to you. So, I was waiting on the conversation.”
Lewis served as the organization’s president for nine months. The Nashville chapter recently earned praise for the reimplementation of the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) program, which is designed to enrich the educational experience of African American high school students, and allows them to compete locally and nationally for $300,000 worth of college scholarships.
Lewis received the “Standing Ovation Award” for the reactivation of the ACT-SO program at the NAACP’s annual conference, which was held in Boston over the summer.

I do not see how one can get low enough to undermine this group.
I have no idea if there is anything ‘newsworthy’ to this story because I don’t follow these types of groups. I have always treated people as individuals and have found greatness and friendships in many different ‘races’. I have also found a lot of bad. Very typical of these types of groups. If you don’t walk lockstep with the “agenda’ from the top, you are history.
