Analysis: Defensive Gun Uses Demonstrate Life and Death Benefits of Supreme Court’s Bruen Decision

In a 2022 case called New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the Supreme Court affirmed that ordinary Americans have a right to bear arms in public for self-defense, and struck down New York’s restrictive framework for issuing concealed carry permits. This framework, in effect, left most civilians in the state without any lawful way to exercise their Second Amendment rights outside of the home.

Bruen immediately drew the ire of gun control activists, who decried the ruling as a threat to public safety. But now it’s clear that the only thing Bruen has done is give peaceable New Yorkers a better chance to protect themselves from violent criminals, without being treated as violent criminals themselves.

Secret Service, FBI Downplay Threat to Trump at California Rally

The U.S. Secret Service and the FBI are downplaying the threat to former President Donald Trump posed by a man arrested outside a California rally Saturday night – despite assertions made by a local sheriff that his detention likely thwarted a third assassination attempt.

Deputies working for the Riverside County sheriff’s office arrested a man, identified as Vem Miller, and subsequently discovered a shotgun, loaded handgun, and high-capacity magazine in his car about a quarter mile from the entrance to Trump’s campaign rally in Coachella Valley. Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco, who endorsed Trump publicly in June, said Miller’s car, identified as a black SUV, had a fake license plate that was unregistered and possessed several phony passports and driver’s licenses with different identities, as well as what Bianco described as a fake press pass.

Three Students Dead in School Shooting in North Detroit, Eight Others Injured

Three students were killed Tuesday in a shooting at Oxford High School in Oakland, Detroit. A suspected teen shooter has been taken into custody, and officials have recovered a handgun. Several others also have been injured in the attack, according to authorities.

Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said in addition to the three deceased, eight people were shot, including a teacher. He estimated that 15 to 20 shots were fired in total. Officers conducted a third search of the high school to ensure there were no other victims.

The students who lost their lives have been identified as 14 and 17-year-old girls, in addition to a 16-year-old boy.
