Commentary: Gallup Poll Shows Homeschooling Rate Doubles as School Satisfaction Plummets

Results of a new Gallup poll released this week may give us the sharpest look yet at how the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted American education and what may lie ahead. According to the poll, parents’ overall satisfaction with their child’s education dropped 10 percent over last year, while at the same time the number of parents saying they will choose homeschooling doubled in 2020 to 10 percent.

This tumultuous back-to-school season has parents and teachers alike scrambling to make sense of the madness: from ever-changing district directives to COVID-19 response protocols. Some school systems have announced that the academic year will start with remote-learning-only. Others are pursuing partial reopening options with both online and in-person instruction. Still others are planning to fully reopen for in-person learning.

Homeschool Girl, 13, Enters UT To Study Computer Coding

By David Tulis / Noogaradio 1240 AM 92.7 FM A 13 year old homeschool girl, Sofia Tomov, is entering studies at the University of Tennessee starting with a course in coding. She looks forward to furthering her passion with computers and problem-solving. “Computer science is a very interesting way to solve global scale problems,” Sophia tells the UT Daily Beacon newspaper. She has published a children’s book, has a patent pending for a drug disposal device to keep water supplies clean, excelled in the ACT, passed two AP courses by age 12 and in 2016 had enrolled in three more AP courses. The Knoxville resident enjoys fencing, playing David Bowie tunes on a guitar and spending time in nature. The girl who hopes to pursue a career in the energy field will be dual enrolled as both high school and university student. She is a recipient of the scholarship that is given to seventh graders who are the 97th percentile. Last fall she was a finalist in contest for young scientists in which she presented the project on an algorithm that examines genetic code for mutations to reduce the negative effects of prescription drugs. “So far they have not found…

Homeschool Convention Coming to Nashville March 30-April 1

Homeschooling parents and advocates looking for advice and support should find plenty of it March 30-April 1 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. It is the fifth year for the Teach Them Diligently Homeschool Convention at the Gaylord, an event packed with opportunities to listen to numerous speakers and shop at a busy exhibit hall. Similar conventions are being held this year in Georgia, Arkansas and Ohio. Organizers say Teach Them Diligently conventions typically draw around 7,000 people. The keynote speaker at the Gaylord this year will be evangelical pastor and radio broadcaster Tony Evans. Hymn-writers Keith and Kristyn Getty will also appear. There will be sessions for those just getting started with homeschooling as well as for those well under way and facing various challenges. Other sessions will focus on helping children with learning difficulties and setting up science labs in the home. In addition, there will insight on the history of Christian education and ways to incorporate biblical instruction in homeschooling. Exhibitors will include Alpha Omega Publications, Classical Conversations, Veritas Press, Inc., DK Publishing, Scholastic, Focus on the Family and World News Group, among many others.
