Commentary: An Ancient Faith Grows in Modern Times

Eastern Orthodox Mass

As a journalist, it’s easy to turn around copy on any of the public policy and political debates of the day, but I struggle to write about religious issues in a meaningful way. My American Spectator columns detail the usual insanity in the California Capitol and Washington, DC, but what can I say about matters of faith, where my usual tool — reason — isn’t entirely useful?

I grew up Jewish, the son of a Nazi Holocaust survivor. Our religion was important, but I was raised in a secular home where religious observance didn’t reflect any deep expression of faith. That led me on a journey to try to make sense of this inexplicable world.

School District Allows LGBTQ Lesson Opt-Outs After Legal Threat by Muslim Parents

Christian, Jewish and Muslim families in suburban D.C. are waiting for a federal appeals court to determine whether their school district can continue requiring their children to read LGBTQ “storybooks” without parental knowledge or consent.

Eleven hundred miles away in a similarly blue jurisdiction led by the United States’ first known Somali-American mayor, Muslim immigrant families who escaped a war-torn country didn’t have to go to court to have their parental rights honored.

Arizona State University Students Hold Anti-Israel ‘Day of Resistance’ on Taxpayer-Funded Campus

Arizona taxpayers — in part — provided the space this week for anti-Israel rallies on the Arizona State University campus. A group called Students for Justice in Palestine held the rally on Thursday as part of a national “Day of Resistance” at Arizona State University in Tempe, five days after Palestinian terrorist group Hamas’ barbaric attack on Israel. The national chapter of the leftist SJP posted a “call for action” on Sunday as Israelis were dealing with the devastation of more than 1,000 civilians murdered and taken hostage by Hamas. Campuses from New York to California reportedly responded to the call for demonstrations for Palestine, against Israel, and — by proxy — for Hamas. A similar SJP event scheduled for The University of Arizona in Tucson was canceled. According to social media posts, organizers called on students “to demonstrate in support of Palestinians and to demand that the US government and University of Arizona disinvest from Israeli apartheid and violence against the Palestinian people.” The liberal group said nothing about the shocking, barbaric violence committed by Hamas in the name of Palestine. University of Arizona President Robert Robbins released a statement opposing the violence but supporting free speech on campus.…

On Tuesday’s Tennessee Star Report with Steve Gill and Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 am to 8:00 am – Gill and Leahy talked to One America News Network’s Neil McCabe about the “squad” and recent claims that Trump is a racist. The three also discussed the Democratic Party’s denial in accepting that Russian collusion didn’t exist, and their continued calls for an unwarranted impeachment. Towards the end of the segment, McCabe described how major Jewish donors of the Democratic Party are becoming upset with Speaker Pelosi and urging her to control AOC. He also noted that there has become a rival split within the Democratic caucus. Leahy: Our guest now, Neil McCabe, One America News Network with us every Tuesday morning at this time. Welcome, Neil. McCabe: Good morning men. Good to be with you. Leahy: So tell us the real story of how people in Washington, Washington insiders, how do they look at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar and her left-wing squad. McCabe: Well I think the President was doing master trolling. Obviously some of the cable networks, not One America News, but some of the others were sort of hyping this in the…

Trump and Omar Exchange Jabs After Minnesota Congresswoman Calls Jewish Adviser a ‘White Nationalist’

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05) and President Donald Trump are feuding on Twitter again, this time after the Minnesota congresswoman called White House policy adviser Stephen Miller a “white nationalist.” “Stephen Miller is a white nationalist. The fact that he still has influence on policy and political appointments is an outrage,” Omar wrote on Twitter Monday night. Stephen Miller is a white nationalist. The fact that he still has influence on policy and political appointments is an outrage. https://t.co/7NyMDgojd7 — Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) April 8, 2019 The comments sparked criticism from Omar’s GOP opponents, who claimed that she was once again targeting Jewish politicians. Trump himself tweeted a video of Jeff Ballabon, a Jewish political strategist and CEO of B2 Strategic, discussing the comments on Fox Business. “What’s completely unacceptable is for Ilhan Omar to yet again target Jews. In this case, it’s not just Stephen Miller, but she’s doing this by declaring a Jew, someone who’s known to be Jewish, a white nationalist. She’s saying, ‘Oh, Jews. You’re not minorities.’ In other words, this is a way of taking away our right to speak out in their culture, in this leftist culture that says only certain kinds of people have…

Trump, First Family Honor 11 Killed in Synagogue Massacre

by Fred Lucas   President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, in a visit Tuesday, placed a white flower and small stone on each of 11 stars set up in the memory of those murdered at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. The Trumps also lighted candles in honor of each man and woman killed Saturday inside the Tree of Life synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood. They met with Rabbi Jeffrey Myers, who leads the congregation. But amid the tragedy, the visit didn’t bridge all political divides. Protesters held signs such as “We didn’t invite you here” and “Trump Loves Nazis,” according to reports from the White House press pool. Others held up a middle finger or gave a thumbs-down. Other protesters shouted, “Words have meaning” and “No more hate.” The president and first lady were at the Tree of Life synagogue for about 20 minutes, along with White House advisers Ivanka Trump, the president’s eldest daughter, and Jared Kushner, his son-in-law. Both are Jewish. Today, I traveled with the President, First Lady, Secretary Mnuchin and my husband Jared to Pittsburgh to pay our respects at The Tree of Life synagogue and visit with first responders. We saw firsthand a community…
