Kari Lake, Kelly Cooper Headline Ballot Chasing Rally with J.D. Vance and TPUSA’s Charlie Kirk in Mesa

Kari Lake and congressional candidate Kelly Cooper spoke at a Turning Point USA rally with J.D. Vance and TPUSA CEO Charlie Kirk at Generation Church in east Mesa on Wednesday. The theme throughout the evening was ballot chasing — knocking on doors and urging large numbers of low propensity voters to cast ballots. Senior Pastor Ryan Visconti said the church was so full there was an overflow room, estimating almost 2,000 in attendance.

Visconti said he received pushback about hosting the political event, with others questioning his judgment. He said he responded to the critics and said it was too imperative to stand up for what’s right. The crowd roared with applause.

Two-Thirds of Arizona Lawmakers Unchallenged in Primary

The highest level of Arizona’s uncontested incumbents since 2018 dominated Tuesday’s primary election. According to a report by Ballotpedia, 317 of the 488 July elections were uncontested – 65 percent.

Of the nine congressional district seats, four incumbents went uncontested. These include 5th Congressional District Republican Incumbent Rep. Andy Biggs, who will face Democrat Katrina Schaffner in the general election, District 4 Democratic Incumbent Greg Stanton, who will face Republican Kelly Cooper in the general election, District 7 Democratic Incumbent Raul Grijalva who will go against Republican Daniel Francis Butierez and District 9 Republican incumbent Paul Gosar who will go against Democrat Quacy Smith.

Republicans Battle to Unseat Stanton in Arizona’s Congressional District 4

The Republicans are hoping to unseat Congressional Democrat Greg Stanton in District 4, who has won three consecutive terms. This district covers all of Tempe, and parts of Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Chandler.

The Cook Political Report lists Stanton’s seat as a solid Democrat despite CD4 having a “D+2” rating. This means on average, a Democratic candidate in this district would perform 2 percentage points better than the national average for Democratic candidates. Pundits say, this slight edge should be beatable with the right candidate. This district is labeled “solid Democrat”  instead of “lean Democrat” due to Stanton’s incumbent status and significant war chest of  $1,517,082.

Republican consultants believe the key to defeating Stanton lies in the significant number of independent voters, which is a huge 34% in all registered voters.

Republicans are entering 2024 with a registration advantage and can highlight Stanton’s consistent alignment with President Biden by showcasing his voting record. The lawmaker votes with Biden almost 100% of the time.
