Commentary: Snopes Veers Far Left to Smear Tennessee Star and Promote Bizarre Conspiracy Theory

by George Rasley   One of the more interesting phenomena of the internet age is the rise of self-appointed Leftwing “fact checkers” who have created a cottage industry of undermining straight news reporting critical of Democrats and Leftist causes. One of the more prominent examples of this phenomena is Snopes.com, which began as a website debunking urban myths on the internet and has gradually moved further and further Left to become a favored tool of the Left for shielding Democrats and helping Leftwing advocacy groups smear conservatives as purveyors of “fake news.” One of the most egregious recent examples of Snopes.com’s Leftist tilt is its defense of Native American Nathan Phillips from claims of stolen valor leveled at him after he instigated the post-March for Life confrontation with the Covington Catholic High School students. While Snopes.com rated the charges that Phillips falsely claimed he was a Vietnam veteran as “unproven” and posted a lengthy defense of him here, the military culture website “Task and Purpose” had already exposed Phillips stolen valor claims. Paul Szoldra explained in a post on taskandpurpose.com, that Phillips has a long history of making “stolen valor” claims: I was going to bring up his troublesome claims of…

Commentary: The Left Lies About the Covington Catholic Kids

by CHQ Staff   Few things illustrate the way the Left promotes lies through the allied establishment media than the recent saga of the Covington Catholic High School kids and their encounter with Leftist activist Nathan Phillips. As Bradley Eli reported for thechurchmilitant.com, pro-life students wearing Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats were attending the March for Life in Washington, D.C. when they were approached by a Native American activist, Nathan Phillips. Phillips walked directly up to one student, Nick Sandmann, while continuing to beat his drum just inches from the young man’s face. Left-leaning media were quick to paint the pro-life and Trump-supporting students as racist and cruel to a Native American. Mr. Phillips was described as a Vietnam veteran, however, Paul Szoldra explained in a post on taskandpurpose.com, Phillips has a long history of making “stolen valor” claims: I was going to bring up his troublesome claims of being a “recon ranger” — which he was not. I was going to reflect on his claim that he was a “Vietnam-times veteran” who came home and was “spit on” and “called a baby killer,” despite his service record keeping him in the United States, and it being unclear where…

Nicholas Sandmann’s Lawyer Says He’s Likely Going After CNN Next, And the Stakes Could Be Higher

by Evie Fordham   The lawyer for Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann will likely sue CNN next, and the stakes could be higher than their suit against The Washington Post. L. Lin Wood is representing Sandmann in another suit against WaPo calling for $250 million in compensatory and punitive damages over its coverage of the student’s interaction with Native American activist Nathan Phillips, according to Fox News. “I expect because of the way [CNN] went after Nicholas so viciously, that the claim for his reputational damage will be higher than it was against The Washington Post,” Wood told Fox News host Mark Levin. “CNN was probably more vicious in its direct attacks on Nicholas than The Washington Post. And CNN goes into millions of individuals’ homes,” Wood continued during an interview that will air on Fox News Channel Sunday. The suit will likely be issued Monday or Tuesday, Wood told Levin. Wood said that Sandmann did “absolutely nothing wrong.” “But you have a situation where CNN couldn’t resist the idea that here’s a guy with a young boy, that Make America Great Again cap on. So they go after him,” he said, adding, “The CNN folks were online…

Report on Covington Students Finds ‘No Evidence’ of ‘Offensive or Racist Statements’

by Rachel del Guidice   A report that examined the January encounter between students from Covington Catholic High School and a Native American activist near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington found “no evidence” of “offensive or racist statements.” “We see no evidence that students responded with any offensive or racist statements of their own,” the report dated Feb. 11 from Greater Cincinnati Investigation read. The report was commissioned by the Catholic Diocese of Covington, which is located in Kentucky. Nick Sandmann and other students of Covington, who were in Washington, D.C., to attend the March for Life in January, faced harsh criticism in mainstream and social media based on a video showing a portion of their encounter Jan. 18 with Nathan Phillips, 64, on the National Mall. “The immediate world-wide reaction to the initial video led almost everyone to believe that our students had initiated the incident and the perception of those few minutes of video became reality,” wrote Bishop Roger Foys of the Covington Diocese in a letter earlier this week. A report that examined the January encounter between students from Covington Catholic High School and a Native American activist near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington found “no evidence”…

Colorado School Superintendent Recommends Dismissing Teacher Who Called Wrong Covington Boy Part of ‘Hitler Youth’

by Neetu Chandak   A Colorado school district superintendent recommended dismissing the middle school teacher who allegedly claimed on Twitter that a random student was part of the “Hitler Youth,” mistaking him for one of the Covington Catholic High School boys caught in the viral encounter with American Indian activist Nathan Phillips. Michelle Grissom, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Mountain Ridge Middle School (MRMS) in Colorado, allegedly named and posted a picture of Covington Catholic student Jay Jackson as one of the boys wearing Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 18. Jackson was not in Washington at the time of the incident that went viral on social media. Jackson’s dad, John Jackson, repeatedly asked Grissom to take down the tweets, but she only removed them once the district was contacted. “I made a recommendation to the Douglas County School District (DCSD) Board of Education that Ms. Grissom be dismissed,” DSCD superintendent Thomas Tucker said in a Tuesday statement. Grissom remains on paid administrative leave, DCSD Public Information Officer Paula Hans said to The Daily Caller News Foundation over email. The social studies teacher has the right to request for “a hearing on the basis…

FAKE NEWS: Fact-Checker ‘Snopes’ Botches Nathan Phillips Fact-Check

by Peter Hasson   Snopes, a left-leaning fact-checking website given preferential treatment by both Facebook and Google, flubbed its fact-check of American Indian activist Nathan Phillips’ false claim of being a Vietnam veteran. Phillips shot to national attention after a viral confrontation between him and a group of high school boys from Covington Catholic high school. Phillips, with the help of credulous national media outlets, said the boys mobbed and racially harassed him as he tried to leave the Indigenous People’s March. Video evidence debunked Phillips’s account. In addition to botching the details of the confrontation, media outlets also inaccurately reported that Phillips is a Vietnam veteran. Phillips described himself in interviews as a “Vietnam-times veteran” and groups affiliated with him told The New York Times that he fought in Vietnam. Phillips explicitly claimed in a 2018 Facebook video that he was a Vietnam veteran who served “in theater.” Military records show that Phillips never deployed to Vietnam, though his military service did include a long stint as a refrigerator technician. Snopes’s fact-check incorrectly labeled it “unproven” that Phillips had falsely claimed to be a Vietnam veteran. Snopes declined to change its misleading ruling despite definitive video evidence of Phillips doing exactly that. Both Facebook and Google give Snopes preferential treatment on their platforms, though…

Commentary: Reject the ‘Wrong on Both Sides’ Dodge

by Dennis Saffran   Now that the media, the Left, and their usual conservative allies have failed to destroy young Nick Sandmann and the other Covington Catholic High School boys who attended the March for Life last weekend, they seem to be falling back on the old “wrong on both sides” standby. Activist Nathan Phillips, the 64-year-old Native-American “elder,” may have lied when he claimed the students surrounded him, blocked his way, and yelled “Build the Wall”—and lied for good measure about being a Vietnam veteran. (In fact, he marched, cameras in tow, into their group while they were waiting for their bus, beating a drum within inches of Sandmann’s face.) But, as the story now goes, the boys—or “many” of them, or maybe just a “few” of them—were “mocking” or “disrespectful.” There were even some “tomahawk chops,” like at sports events, and maybe a few of what may have been “war whoops” or at least mimicry of his chants in a less than adulatory tone. Even commentators who have supported the students, such as Robby Soave in his otherwise excellent reportage at Reason, have criticized them for this behavior. Two points need to be made about all this. The…

Todd Starnes: LIAR! NBC Says Phillips Never Claimed to be Vietnam Vet

by Todd Starnes   The Mainstream Media will do whatever is necessary to protect Native American and professional agitator Nathan Phillips. Phillips, who was filmed harassing a group of Catholic school students, was a guest on NBC’s Today with Savannah Guthrie. On Wednesday Guthrie grilled 16-year-old Nick Sandmann, the young man who bore the brunt of Phillip’s abuse. She asked the boy if he saw his “own fault” in the incident. However, she lobbed softballs during her interview with Phillips — going so far as to dismiss reports that he lied about serving in Vietnam. “There has also been some question about the nature of your military service… What exactly is the nature of your service?” @savannahguthrie asks Nathan Phillips pic.twitter.com/PSeS1oTYGh — TODAY (@TODAYshow) January 24, 2019 “There has also been some question about the nature of your military service and this is a good chance to clear it up,” Guthrie said. “Some have said you were a Vietnam veteran, I don’t believe you have said that, what exactly is the nature of your service?” That’s a flat-out lie — and we have the video evidence. Here’s what Phillips said in a Twitter posting: “I’m a Vietnam Vet. I served…

Vietnam-Era Vet Tells The Tennessee Star Report Nathan Phillips’ Claim Not Credible

On Wednesday’s Tennessee Star Report with Steve Gill and Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 am to 8:00 am – the duo took a call from a Vietnam era veteran named Ben, who clarified the statement made by Nathan Phillips regarding his service as “Vietnam veteran times” was technically incorrect statement due to the fact that, as Ben clarifies, the country was downsizing at that time. Gill: Why aren’t we seeing Marines step up and say “Oh yeah I went to boot camp with this guy. I served with this guy.”  Why aren’t we seeing anyone in the media actually dig deeper into who this guy is and how his story is as false as his claim that the kids approached him. Let’s go next to Ben. Ben you’re on the Tennessee Star Report good morning. Ben: Good morning, I really appreciate you guys so it couldn’t be a better breathe of fresh air. Gill: Thank you. Ben: Ok, there was a difference between a combat Veteran which I am not, I’m a Vietnam-era veteran. Gill: Ok. Ben: I served during the period of Vietnam and conjoined American Legion but…

Covington Students Speak Out Against Media Smear Campaign, Detail Death Threats and Doxxing

by Joshua Gill   Students from Covington Catholic High School spoke out against the media smear campaign against them, saying they’ve endured death threats and have been doxxed multiple times. Two Covington students identified as Sam and Grant spoke out in a video posted to social media by high school junior C.J. Pearson, denouncing the media’s portrayal of their peers as racist aggressors and claiming “several media outlets blatantly lied” about their confrontation with American Indian activist Nathan Phillips. The students said they and their Kentucky school received multiple threats, including threats of shooting, arson and bombs, and that people exposed the personal information of Covington students online. “There have been many threats against our lives, against our parents,” Sam said. “Some of these threats include that we should be locked in the school and it should be burned to the ground, the school being bombed, school shooting threats.” “It’s really scary. I know that a lot of people are scared to go to school tomorrow and won’t be attending because of what could happen. There have been cops there ever since the incident and I think there will be a lot more tomorrow,” he added. Grant claimed people on…

Washington Post Issues Correction: Activist Who Instigated Confrontation With Covington Catholic Kids Not a Vietnam Veteran

Left-wing agitator Nathan Phillips, the 64-year-old Native American man who confronted several Kentucky high school students from Covington Catholic this past weekend in Washington, D.C., is not a Vietnam veteran, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday, correcting an earlier report in which the iconic liberal newspaper, now owned by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, said he was, in fact, a Vietnam veteran. The Post made its stunning correction on Tuesday at the bottom of an article about Phillips’ interactions with the Catholic high school students, where it admitted its error. “Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips said he served in the U.S. Marines but was never deployed to Vietnam,” The Post story read. Phillips had a well-publicized encounter last weekend with a group of teens from Covington Catholic wearing “Make America Great Again” hats in Washington, D.C. Phillips’ military credentials matter a lot, according to National Review writer and Columbia, Tenn. resident David French. “Much of the continued progressive hatred for the Covington Kids depends on taking Nathan Phillips at his word,” French wrote on his Twitter page. “No one should.” Several other publications have incorrectly reported previously that…
