Transgender Woman Olivia Hill Advances to Metro Nashville Council Runoff Election

Olivia Hill, a self-described “proud transgender woman,” garnered enough votes last Thursday to make it to the runoff election in the 2023 Metro Nashville Election.

Hill, running for one of five at-large seats on the Metro Nashville Council, will face seven other candidates vying for the seat: Delishia Porterfield, Burkley Allen, Howard Jones, Quin Evans-Segall, Russ Pulley, Chris Cheng, and Jeff Syracuse.

Unofficial election results released by the Davidson County Election Commission showed that Hill received 10,395 votes on election night, 650 absentee votes, and 14,731 early votes, bringing her total number of votes to 25,776.

Incumbent at-large councilmember Zulfat Suara was the only candidate to win over 10 percent of the total votes cast in last week’s election, guaranteeing her re-election to one of the five at-large seats.

In all, Hill earned approximately 6.8 percent of the total 380,325 votes cast in the Council At-Large race.

The Metro City Council hopeful was born a male but identifies as transgender female.

On July 18, Hill released her first advertisement, calling herself a “proud trans woman” and touting her service as a U.S. combat Navy veteran, saying that she has “never been scared of a tough fight.”

In her ad, Hill goes on to say that Nashville is “under attack from right-wing conservatives who want to strip our rights and tell us how to run our city.”

In recent years, according to her website, Hill has served as a community leader, “educating the public about the difficulties faced by women and the LGBTQ+ community.”

Hill has been endorsed by the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association; Women in Numbers; Register of Deeds Karen Johnson; Nashville Business Coalition; LiUNA! Local 386 Metro Council Members Emily Benedict, Russ Bradford, and Kathleen Murphy, the Nashville Justice League; VoteVets; and Tennessee Advocates for Planned Parenthood.

The 2023 Metro Nashville runoff election will be held on Thursday, September 14.
