After Denying Relationship, Ilhan Omar Announces Marriage to Political Consultant

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05) announced Wednesday night that she has married Tim Mynett, a political consultant who has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Omar’s campaign committee.

“Got married! From partners in politics to life partners, so blessed,” Omar said on Instagram along with a picture of her and Mynett.

Omar denied the existence of her relationship with Mynett in an August interview with WCCO’s Esme Murphy.

“No, I am not. I have like said yesterday I have no interest in really allowing the conservation about my personal life to continue and so I have no desire to discuss it,” she said.

Less than two months later, Omar filed for divorce from Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children. Mynett officially parted ways with his wife, Dr. Beth Jordan, in December, The Minnesota Sun reported.

“I have a statement to make,” Jordan said during a divorce court hearing, claiming her husband “had an affair with Ilhan Omar.”

In court papers she filed, Jordan claimed that the marriage fell apart when Mynett announced that he was “romantically involved with and in love with another woman, Ilhan Omar.” Jordan first learned of her husband’s involvement with Omar in April when he made a “shocking declaration of love” for her.

Jordan further accused her ex-husband of putting their 13-year-old son in “harm’s way” by taking him out in public “with Rep. Omar who at the time had garnered a plethora of media attention along with death threats.”

Omar’s involvement with Mynett prompted a national nonprofit to lodge an FEC complaint against her, which claims that she used campaign funds for “romantic companionship.”

“The complaint documents improper disclosure of campaign expenditures by the federal candidate’s committee, and the personal use of campaign funds by the candidate,” the complaint states.

Despite the complaint, Omar’s campaign continued to pay E Street Group LLC, Mynett’s consulting firm, thousands of dollars for research services, fundraising, travel, and more. In the third quarter of 2019, Omar disbursed $146,713 to the firm. She then paid E Street Group another $217,000 in the final quarter of 2019.

Between August 2018 and the end of 2019, Omar’s campaign committee paid Mynett’s firm a total of $587,000, most of which was received after their relationship was exposed.
