Phase 1C, Phase 2 of Coronavirus Vaccine Distribution to Open this Week, DeWine Says

The next phase of distribution for the COVID-19 vaccine in Ohio will begin this week and include increased eligibility, according to an announcement from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday.

Phase 1C will be open to those with Type 1 Diabetes, those who are pregnant, bone marrow transplant recipients and those living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Phase 1C will open on March 4. Phase 2 of vaccine distribution will also begin that day, with those ages 60 and older becoming eligible.

The vaccine will also be distributed to those working in child care services, including administrators, lead and assistant teachers, and substitutes enrolled in Ohio’s Professional Registry who are currently working in open child care and pre-Kindergarten programs. The phase also includes licensing specialists employed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services or county Job and Family Services.

Phase 1C includes those working in funeral services such as morticians, funeral home directors, crematory operators and apprentices, as well as law enforcement and corrections officers. The state clarified that this includes only active duty officers, not retired, “special” or reserve officers. Ohioans with a valid firefighting certificate who are active duty members of a Ohio fire department are also eligible to receive the vaccine.

Roughly 246,000 people are eligible under Phase 1C, while 695,000 people are eligible under Phase 2 requirements, according to DeWine.

Phase 1B opened up to Ohioans in mid-February, allowing those with certain medical disorders to be vaccinated.

Nearly 1.7 Ohio residents have received at least the first dose of the vaccine or roughly 14 percent of the state’s population, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
