The Johnson County Board of Commissioners have called to convene a special meeting on Thursday, May 11 to consider and appoint the interim successor for the office of State Representative for District 3.
The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the upper courtroom of the Johnson City Courthouse in Mountain City. The meeting will be open to the public, according to an announcement by the Board of Commissioners.
Each candidate vying for the position will be given five minutes to present themselves for consideration before the County Mayor and County Commission. A successor – who will serve until the Special Election is held – will then be selected by the Board of Commissioners.
The individual appointed at the special meeting will succeed former Republican State Representative Scotty Campbell, who resigned from his post last week over sexual harassment allegations.
According to a memorandum that was sent to House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) on March 29, the Tennessee House of Representatives Workplace Discrimination & Harassment Subcommittee concluded that Campbell “violated the Policy” against workplace discrimination and harassment “based on the completed staff investigation.”
Governor Bill Lee issued a Writ of Election shortly after Campbell’s resignation, ordering a Special Election to fill the seat’s vacancy. Interested candidates have until noon on May 11 to complete the qualifying phase and the withdrawal deadline for consideration is noon on Monday, May 15.
Early voting for the Special Election will open on Friday, June 2 with the Special Primary scheduled for Thursday, June 22.
Registered voters in Carter, Johnson, Hawkins, and Sullivan Counties will have the opportunity to select the third district’s new State Representative in the Special General Election on Thursday, August 3.

If I read the article correctly, Early voting begins June 2, with the Primary on June 22. Does anyone see anything wrong with this?
When are Republicans going to figure out that the Primary debates need to come first, BEFORE EARLY VOTING STARTS.
THIS worries me as the 2024 Presidential election will be here soon.
No Early Voting until after Primary Debates & NO Early Voting until AFTER DEBATES in the General.
