State Representative Diego Espinoza Drops from Unopposed Arizona Senate Race, Leaves Seat Open to Write-In Candidates

Arizona State Representative Diego Espinoza (D-Tolleson) announced last week that he would resign from the Arizona House, despite winning the August primary election for a seat in the Senate, leaving no one on the ballot.

“Today, I announced my resignation to my seat in the Arizona House effective Monday, September 5th 2022. I will also forgo my primary election win for a seat in the State Senate,” Espinoza said while announcing his resignation. “As a lawmaker, I was able to reach challenging milestones for our community and overcame many obstacles to achieve a better tomorrow for our people in Arizona.”

Election Handicapper Says Three Major 2022 Senate Races Now a ‘Toss-up,’ a Boon to Republicans

Hotly contested Senate seats in Georgia, Arizona and Nevada are now well within the realm of a “toss-up” in next year’s races, a notable political forecaster is predicting.

The Cook Political Report, a longtime newsletter that specializes in U.S. election predictions, this week moved those races to its toss-up column for the 2022 elections.

In Georgia, Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock faces re-election after narrowly winning a special election this year. His victory helped tip the Senate in favor of Democrats.

Housekeeping and Updates on Georgia’s General Election Runoff

Georgian voters have another opportunity to register to vote in time for the upcoming federal general election runoff on January 5. The ballot includes both U.S. Senate seats for Georgia: Republican incumbents Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue facing Democratic challengers Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.

The deadline to register for the senatorial election runoff is December 7, and in-person voting will begin on December 14. Officials will begin mailing absentee ballots by November 18.

Republicans Take Back Alabama Senate Seat, Tommy Tuberville Defeats Doug Jones

Former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville defeated Alabama Sen. Doug Jones, The Associated Press reported, flipping a key seat in the battle for control of the Senate.

Tommy Tuberville was declared the winner almost immediately after Alabama’s polls closed Tuesday night, according to The Associated Press. Coming into the night, Tuberville had been the heavy favorite to win the race with FiveThirtyEight giving him an 87% chance of flipping the seat.

Heller Pulls Away From Jacky Rosen in Poll as Nevada Senate Race Moves Red

by Jason Hopkins   New polling shows Republican Nevada Sen. Dean Heller is pulling ahead of his Democratic rival, Jacky Rosen, indicating a sharp turnaround for the incumbent Republican. A new Emerson College Survey released Monday shows Heller with a commanding seven-point lead over Rosen, a liberal congresswoman vying for his seat, 48 percent to 41 percent. The poll of likely voters was conducted from Oct. 10 to 12, with a margin of error of 4.2 percent. The Emerson survey comes nearly a week after an NBC/Marist poll showed Heller ahead of Rosen by only two percentage points. As recently as Oct. 1, a CNN survey found Rosen in the lead by 4 percentage points among likely voters. Heller has now taken the lead in the Real Clear Politics average of recent polls. The latest numbers provide good news for Heller, a first-term Nevada senator who is has been described by many as the most vulnerable Republican running in this midterm cycle. Also, the change in direction provides further evidence of a “Kavanaugh bounce” for Republicans.
