Former Georgia U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler Joins Governor Kemp as He Signs ‘Zuckerbucks’ Ban into Law

Chairwoman of the nonprofit group Greater Georgia and former Georgia U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler recently joined Governor Brian Kemp as he signed Senate Bill 222, also known as the “Zuckerbucks” ban, into law.

Under the new law, effective immediately, local governments are prohibited from accepting outside funding to pay for their election operations.

Specifically, election administration costs must be paid for with public funds. The law also prohibits government employees and elections officials from receiving gifts valued at more than $500 from third-party groups to conduct primaries or elections.

“Today, Governor Kemp took the final step to ensure that elections in the state of Georgia are never bought and paid for by special interests,” Loeffler said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful to the Governor for signing SB 222 into law, and to all our conservative lawmakers who took immediate action to stop partisan influence in our elections when Greater Georgia blew the whistle on it earlier this year. This is a tremendous win not only for our organization but for every Georgia voter – and we will never stop fighting to hold bad actors accountable, to deliver free and fair elections in the state of Georgia.”

Senate Bill 222 was introduced in the state Senate in February shortly after it was reported that the state’s DeKalb County accepted $2 million in grant funding from the Center for Tech and Civic Life’s (CTCL) U.S Alliance for Election Excellence initiative, as previously reported by The Georgia Star News. CTCL has benefited from millions of dollars in donations from Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, including the help of launching the U.S. Alliance for Election Excellence itself.

The legislation was sponsored by Georgia State Senator Max Burns (R-Sylvania) and carried by Georgia State Representative Houston Gaines (R-Athens).
