U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07) applauded Utah U.S. Senator Mike Lee’s (R-UT) effort in urging Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to demand a Senate trial for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 214-213 on February 13 to impeach Mayorkas for his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and breach of public trust.

On Tuesday, Lee led a letter signed by 12 other Republican senators to McConnell, saying that the Senate has a “constitutional responsibility” to conduct a trial following the House’s impeachment articles.

“It is imperative that the Senate Republican conference prepare to fully engage our Constitutional duty and hold a trial,” the letter reads.

“We cannot fail to uphold our constitutional duty and conduct an impeachment trial for Secretary Mayorkas, who has ignored his duty to protect our country,” Lee said in a separate statement. “Chuck Schumer is trying to sweep this travesty under the rug by violating the constitution and foregoing a trial. Republican leadership cannot stand idly by and let him.”

Green, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee and led the House in passing the articles of impeachment, cheered Lee’s letter to McConnell.

Yes, Every Kid

“Thank you, Senator. Secretary Mayorkas refused to comply with the law and breached the public trust. The constitutional precedent for impeaching him is clear. He must be removed from office,” Green wrote on X.`

Tennessee U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), who signed onto Lee’s Tuesday letter to McConnell, has also called on Senate leadership to hold a trial for Mayorkas and said she would vote to convict him if “given the opportunity.”

In addition to Lee and Blackburn, U.S. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), J.D. Vance (R-OH), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Mike Braun (R-IN), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Ted Budd (R-NC), and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) signed onto the letter to McConnell.
