As tens of millions of American families across the country began to see the second round of monthly cash payments appear in their bank accounts Friday, Republicans in Congress remained oddly quiet.

The checks were the result of an expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC), which was part of the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package President Joe Biden signed into law in March. While every Republican in Congress voted against the bill, the credit itself is overwhelmingly popular among registered Republicans and Americans overall, creating a rift between reliable conservative voters and the GOP lawmakers who represent them.

Nashville Metro Council Member Wonders If Mayor John Cooper Will Allow Conservatives to Help Pick New Police Chief

Nashville Metro At-Large Council Member Steve Glover wondered this week if certain residents of Davidson County who lean right politically will have a say selecting a new police chief to replace the retiring Steve Anderson.

This, as Mayor John Cooper on Tuesday announced what he called a roadmap to finding a new chief. According to a press release, Cooper will rely on Metro Human Resources and a candidate review committee to narrow that person down.

Nashville’s Community Oversight Board Wants to Help Select Police Chief Steve Anderson’s Replacement

  Members of Nashville’s Metro Community Oversight Board plan to help city officials find Nashville’s next police chief. “Following Mayor John Cooper’s announcement today of Chief Steve Anderson’s decision to retire as Chief of Police, the Community Oversight Board (COB) looks forward to being involved in the selection process of the city’s next Chief of Police,” COB members said in a press release this week. “The voice of the community must be reflected early and often during the national search and selection process, and the needs and values of the people of Nashville should be heavily considered and heard. The Community Oversight Board welcomes the invitation to be a member of the selection committee and is ready to continue the work that has been mandated by the Nashville community.” As The Tennessee Star reported this week, Anderson will retire in likely six months’ time. Potential Nashville Mayoral Candidate Carol Swain Suggests Ways to Boost Police Morale

If Carol Swain decides to run a second time for Nashville mayor then she said she may have a way to boost morale among the city’s police officers. Swain said low morale exists, and, for this, she blames low pay and current Police Chief Steve Anderson. “When it comes to the police problems, one of the things is that police don’t get a say in the selection of the police chief,” Swain told The Tennessee Star this week. “I think it is important that when the next police chief is selected that some representatives of the police department sit on that committee (to choose the chief) and the police officers themselves get an opportunity to decide who will sit on that committee. Nashville Police May Get New Community Oversight Board

Nashville Mayor David Briley does not plan to fire Police Chief Steve Anderson. Additionally, a November referendum calling for a community oversight board over Nashville police is apparently still a go. This, despite the members of the Nashville Fraternal Order of the Police expressing disapproval with the proposal. According to U.S. News & World Report, members of the group Nashville Organized for Action and Hope want Briley to fire Anderson after the July killing of Daniel Hambrick. In that case, a video camera recorded a Nashville police officer, Andrew Delke, shooting Hambrick in the back as he ran away from him. Delke said Hambrick had a gun but he wouldn’t drop it. According to NOAH’s website, a coalition of different community organizations and labor unions in Nashville make up the organization. Briley’s spokeswoman Judith Byrd gave The Tennessee Star the mayor’s written statement on Anderson. “The chief has agreed to work with us on the policing project, and I have his full cooperation in identifying ways to better police the community.
