Arizona House Committee Approves Recommendations for Addressing Teen Mental Health in the State

The Arizona State House’s Teen Mental Health Ad Hoc Committee, chaired by Rep. Joanne Osborne (R-Goodyear), met Thursday to approve recommendations and actions that should be taken to address this issue.

“Today’s meeting was the culmination of months of focus and effort by our members and subcommittees to develop recommendations to address gaps in access to care, raise awareness about bullying and the dangers of social media, and to support those with substance use disorders, as well as their family members who are forced to watch their loved ones suffer,” said Osborne.

Connecticut Town’s Third Teen Death in Two Months Places Mental Health at Forefront

Members of the community in Darien, Connecticut joined together in a Zoom call this past week to focus on the warning signs of suicide and mental illness in the wake of the death of a 16-year-old boy last weekend, the third death in two months of teen boys in the coastal town in Fairfield County, in the southwestern corner of the state.

“This is the third student that the school has grieved in the past two months,” said Darien Superintendent of Schools Alan Addley, according to CT Examiner.  “The pain of losing these beautiful young lives is unbearable. It is devastating for the families, the school and the town. Our school community is understandably hurting from these tragic losses of life.”

Arizona Lawmakers Eye Teen Mental Health in Wake of Texas Massacre

In reaction to the mass shooting inside of a Texas elementary school, Arizona lawmakers seek to explore their options to help teenagers struggling with mental health issues.

Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers appointed State Representative Joanne Osborne, R-Goodyear, to chair a new Ad Hoc Committee on Teen Mental Health this week.
