Tennessee U.S. Rep. Mark Green Delivers Articles of Impeachment Against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the U.S. Senate

Tennessee U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07), who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, was among those who delivered two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 214-213 to impeach Mayorkas earlier this year on February 13 for his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and breach of the public trust.

The articles of impeachment against Mayorkas came as a result of a year-long, five-phase investigation – which included 10 full and subcommittee hearings, transcribed interviews of chief and deputy chief patrol agents, and five interim reports totaling nearly 400 pages – conducted by the House Homeland Security Committee.

Now, Green is demanding that the U.S. Senate “hold and conduct a full trial, hear the evidence, and render a verdict” on the articles.

“The evidence is clear—Secretary Mayorkas should be tried by the Senate for high crimes and misdemeanors,” Green said in a statement. “Specifically, the House found that he willfully and systemically refused to comply with the laws passed by Congress and breached the public trust. These are serious charges that I urge my colleagues in the Senate to treat with the gravity and deliberation they deserve.”

“The Senate has a responsibility to conduct a full trial, hear the evidence, and render a verdict. Refusing to do so would mark the first time the Senate has refused to hold an impeachment trial when it had the opportunity to do so. Such unprecedented action would be a tacit approval of Secretary Mayorkas’ assault on our constitutional order and an affront to the millions of Americans suffering under this sanctioned crisis. I look forward to the trial,” Green added.

Before Green and other impeachment managers delivered the articles of impeachment to the Senate on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called the impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas an “abuse of power.”

Schumer is expected to hold a vote to table the impeachment articles after senators are sworn in as jurors on Wednesday.
