Greater Georgia Partners with the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement to Launch New Voter Registration Contest for High School Students

Greater Georgia, a nonprofit organization focused on voter engagement in the state, announced Thursday it is partnering with the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement to launch a new voter registration contest for high school students across the Peach State.

The Georgia Center for Civic Engagement sponsors civics clubs in nearly 100 school districts across the Peach State, serving over 165,000 K-12 students each year.

The organization’s “Be the People” Competition will take place in more than 80 high schools across Georgia, “encouraging students to register their eligible peers to vote ahead of the 2023 and 2024 election cycles,” according to a press release by Greater Georgia.

The schools that register the greatest number of students for the competition will be awarded prizes sponsored by Greater Georgia.

“The Georgia Center for Civic Engagement is a champion for civics education across our state, and Greater Georgia is thrilled to partner on this initiative to register the next generation of voters,” former U.S. Senator and Greater Georgia Chairwoman Kelly Loeffler said in a statement. “Young people continue to be our fastest-growing demographic and are the future of our country – which is why early engagement and education is so critical. By taking a positive, proactive approach, our ‘Be the People’ Competition will build a pipeline of informed and active voters that can make a difference in 2023 and beyond.”

President and CEO of the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement Randell Trammell added the new initiative will “arm students with the tools to become decision-makers for our democracy.”

“With the support of Senator Loeffler and Greater Georgia, we’re excited to help We the People Be the People,” Trammell added.

Students can register to vote at age 17 ½ and begin voting when they turn 18.

The deadline to register for this year’s November 7 municipal election is October 10 for all eligible voters.
