In the Wake of Waukesha Attack, Lawmakers Propose Bail Reform Again

State Rep. Cindi Duchow has been on a crusade for years to tighten up Wisconsin’s bail laws, and the effort began close to home.

“I have been working on this a long time,” the Delafield Republican told Empower Wisconsin last week. “It started mainly when a man on my street was charged with molesting his grandchildren and was out on ($75,000) bail. For several months he was free.”

Wisconsin GOP Governor Candidate Says She’d Fire DA in Waukesha ‘Parade Massacre’ on ‘Day One’

Wisconsin GOP gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Kleefisch is running on a get-tough-on-crime agenda to unseat Democrat Gov. Tony Evers, saying Friday his “permissive culture” allowed the 2021 Waukesha Christmas parade tragedy to happen.

Tony Evers (D) seeks the removal of Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm who approved the low bail for the alleged Waukesha parade killer Darrell Brooks. “The devastation resulting from Chisholm’s dereliction of duty to protect the public has reached outside the borders of Milwaukee County,” the complaint reportedly says.

Far-left media outlets and commentators have tied the deadly shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan to former President Donald J. Trump, all while denying that the massacre in Waukesha, Wisconsin could have had political motivations. 

“Comprehensive coverage of the Oxford High School shooting here, from the gunman’s chilling videos to his parents’ outspoken political views,” Daily Beast’s Rachel Olding bragged on Twitter.

Senators Johnson, Baldwin Condemn ‘Attempt to Exploit’ Waukesha Tragedy

Wisconsin’s U.S. senators are telling “outside groups” to stop trying to use Waukesha’s parade tragedy for their own purposes.

Republican Ron Johnson and Democrat Tammy Baldwin issued a joint statement on Saturday decrying the politicization of the deaths at Waukesha’s Christmas Parade.

“It has come to our attention that outside individuals or groups may attempt to exploit the tragedy that occurred last Sunday in Waukesha for their own political purposes. As the U.S. Senators representing Wisconsin, one from each political party, we are asking anyone considering such action to cease and desist,” the two wrote.

Democratic-run cities that have implemented bail reform have seen a rise in criminal activity amid the release of criminals with multiple offenses who went on to commit additional crimes following their releases.

Just five days before allegedly plowing a red SUV through a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisc., killing six, the suspected attacker, who had a long criminal history, had been released on $1,000 bail in a case in which he was accused of running a woman over in his car. The low bail for the suspect — even the Milwaukee County DA has since acknowledged it was “inappropriately low” — has thrust bail reform back to the forefront of the national conversation.
