Ohio Right to Life reacted Tuesday after a leaked draft of an opinion that could overturn Roe v. Wade, the infamous Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal at the federal level, was published in German-owned Politico.
Mary Parker, the director of Legislative Affairs at Ohio Right to Life, emphasized that if the leaked opinion holds, abortion will not be made illegal, but decisions about whether abortion should be legal will be left up to individual states.
“We understand that the document released from the Supreme Court regarding the Dobbs case is not the final opinion nor is it the official opinion,” Parker told The Ohio Star. “However, if the draft opinion holds and the five justices remain firm in their beliefs, then the outcome is that the issue of abortion will be decided by individual states.”
She also noted that the Ohio has abortion ban bills pending in the legislature.
“We at Ohio Right to Life have worked tirelessly to end abortion in the state of Ohio, and we will continue to do so,” she said. “We are urging elected officials to support the Human Life Protection Act (SB 123 and HB 598), which will ban abortion in the state of Ohio, except for those cases where the life of the mother is at stake. We also will continue to advance programs and policies that help women in crisis pregnancies and create a culture that honors women and empowers them to choose life.”
The leak was published Monday night, causing outrage among the far left, which fervently supports abortion.
Tuesday morning, the Supreme Court released a statement about the leak.
“Yesterday, a news organization published an opinion in a pending case,” said a statement from the Court. “Justices circulate draft opinions internally as a routine and essential part of the Court’s confidential deliberative work. Although the document described in yesterday’s reports is authentic, it does not represent a decision by the Court or the final position on the issues of the case.”
Chief Justice John Roberts vowed to get to the bottom of the leak.
“To the extent this betrayal of confidence of the Court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operations, it will not succeed. The work of the Court will not be affected in any way.”
“We at the Court are blessed to have a workforce – permanent employees and law clerks alike – intensely loyal to the institution and dedicated to the rule of law,” he said. “Court employees have an exemplary and important tradition of respecting the confidentiality of the judicial process and upholding the trust of the Court. This was a singular and egregious breach of that trust that is an affront to the Court and the community of public servants who work here.”
“I have directed the Marshal of the Court to launch an investigation into the source of the leak.”
