Noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “an evil man,” U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance Tuesday slammed proponents of U.S. intervention in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“The media and political elites are seething at me because I uttered aloud what everyone deep down knows is true: that the Russia-Ukraine border dispute has nothing to do with our national security, no American interest is served by our intervention, and that the obsession with Ukraine from our idiot leaders serves no function except to distract us from our actual problems,” Vance said in a press release.
Vance says the American government should focus on issues that affect the homeland, not issues abroad.
“There is a real crisis in our towns and cities. Fentanyl brought across the Mexican border kills dozens of our people every week in Ohio,” he said. “Sex traffickers sell slaves into our communities. While Biden and the RINOs send troops to Ukraine, the Mexican drug cartels continue to terrorize our state. Let’s declare them a terrorist organization and send our troops to the southern border instead. And as Republicans, let’s stop giving cover to the same group of experts who have blundered their way into two decades of foreign policy catastrophes.”
Monday, Vance’s opponent and former Ohio Republican Party Chairwoman Jane Timken said in a press release that while she does not favor sending American troops to fight in Eastern Europe, she thinks that putting America First “means protecting American security interests at home and abroad,” and noted that if Russia overtakes Ukraine, the American economy could suffer and America’s enemies might get the impression that the United States is not interested in protecting its foreign allies.
The other primary opponent Vance mentioned in his press release had a similar message.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an unacceptable act of unprovoked aggression and must elicit consequences from the international community,” Mike Gibbons said in a press release. “Russia should be isolated politically and economically and face tough economic sanctions. While I am one-hundred percent opposed to the deployment of American troops to Ukraine, Russia’s invasion must not go unanswered.”
Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced that American troops are preparing for battle alongside NATO troops, but that his administration is still hoping for a diplomatic solution to the problem.
“I have authorized additional movements of U.S. forces and equipment already stationed in Europe to strengthen our Baltic allies,” he said. “Let me be clear, these are totally defensive moves on our part. We have no intention of fighting Russia.”
