Gov. DeWine Deploys Ohio National Guard to Help Food Banks

Gov. Mike DeWine called in the Ohio National Guard Wednesday to help food banks distribute food during the state’s coronavirus relief efforts.

Three hundred personnel members will deploy to 12 food bank warehouses, which helps provide food to all 88 counties in the state. The National Guard members will help pack and sort food into boxes, distribute food through “no touch” methods, and assist with logistical needs to help protect the public, according to the Ohio Association of Food Banks (OAFB)’s press release.

“The action I’ve taken to activate the Ohio National Guard will provide support to our food pantries that are low on staff and need help getting food to some of our most vulnerable citizens,” Gov. Mike DeWine said. “By looking out for our neighbors and following proper health and safety guidelines, we’ll make it through this together.”

Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director for OAFB, thanked Ohio for sending in the National Guard.

“We welcome these National Guard members as part of our foodbank family and thank them for their dedication and diligence in the weeks ahead,” she said. “We encourage our clients and community members to join us in welcoming them with gratitude and friendship as they assist us in our important work.”

Maj. Gen. John C. Harris Jr., Ohio adjutant general said the Ohio National Guard has a long history of supporting the state and nation during times of emergency.

“Our Guard members are coming from counties across the state to serve their own communities, ensuring their neighbors continue to receive food and pantry items,” he said.

Food banks across the state have made several changes how it is operating while it deals with the coronavirus. All food banks are using “no-touch” methods of food distribution, staff members implementing drive through delivery methods, and making “to-go” meals, according to an OAFB press release.
