The City of Elyria is in mourning after what’s being called a ‘murder-suicide’ claimed the lives of five people yesterday. Police conducted a health and wellness inspection of the home where they discovered the scene. The bodies of at least three children were among the dead.
Police arrived yesterday morning at the Willow Park Road home to conduct a health and wellness inspection. Upon arriving they discovered the bodies, including at least three children aged between six and twelve.
The Mayor of Elyria Frank Whitfield made a statement on the shooting saying “It is with great sadness that we share this tragic news. This has been a challenging year — to say the least. Never did we imagine having to share the news that we’ve lost one of Elyria’s families in this way.”
The mayor went on to say, “My heart is broken for this family in particular the children. I cannot imagine the pain those close to them must feel and we send our deepest condolences and are here to support them and any of our residents who need our help.”
In a Facebook post yesterday Elyria City Schools said that it would be providing support to those effected by the tragedy. “On Monday, an Elyria Schools team of counselors and social workers trained in trauma and crisis care will be available for students, parents and staff who are in need of support. The counselors will be at Elyria High School on Monday, Aug. 3, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Visitors may enter through the Performing Arts Center.) Please reach out if you or your child would like to talk.”
The City urged citizens to seek help should they be struggling emotionally and mentally, saying “The City of Elyria reminds its residents of the many mental health organizations available to provide support. If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally or mentally, please connect with one of the following supports. Studies show that most people with mental health challenges get better and many recover completely.

Police are still investigating the tragedy, and information on a motive or a timeline have not been released at this time.
