The Ohio Department of Family Jobs and Services released numbers Friday that showed Ohio’s unemployment rate in May at 13.7 percent.
Ohio’s unemployment rate is trending in a downward direction as the state’s unemployment rate went down almost four percentage points from April to May. As the unemployment rate continued to go down, the Buckeye State had 211,000 unemployed workers go back to work in May.
Ohio currently has a higher unemployment rate than the national average, which is 13.3 percent.
The private sector in May saw an additional 112,000 jobs be created. The top three industries that added the most jobs were leisure and hospitality (36,600); trade, transportation, and utilities (31,400); and educational and health services (17,000).
Furthermore, employment in goods-producing industries increased by 38,400 jobs. Construction (19,200) and mining industries (19,000) added the most job in this category.
On the other hand, government employment, which is made up of local and state government, ended up losing 23,300 jobs in May. The federal government did not lose any jobs last month.
When May 2020’s unemployment rate is compared to last year’s unemployment rate in May, it is a totally different story. In May 2019, Ohio’s unemployment rate stood at 3.6 percent.
Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment shrunk by 757,600 jobs from May 2019 to May 2020. The two hardest-hit industries, goods-producing (100,800) and manufacturing (80,900) lost a combined 181,700 jobs during this time span.
June’s unemployment rate for Ohio expects to get lower as the weekly unemployment claims in Ohio continue to go down. For the last three weeks, Ohioans filing unemployment claims has been under 40,000.
