The Ohio State Bar Association has awarded Republican Ohio Supreme Court Justice Patrick Fischer with its highest honor, the Ohio Bar Medal.
The Ohio State Bar Association states that the Ohio Bar Medal is awarded to individuals who have selflessly donated their time and talents by assuming important leadership positions on the bench and in the organized bar, as well as to people who have silently strived to win the community’s utmost respect and affection.
According to Alex Triantafilou, the newly elected head of the Ohio Republican Party, Fischer’s award is well deserved.
“Ohio is blessed to have brilliant, conservative legal minds who are consistent in their application of the law on our state’s highest court. This award is truly an honor, and there are none more deserving than Justice Pat Fischer,” Triantafilou said.
The Ohio State Bar Association praised Fischer’s lifelong commitment to improving Ohio’s judicial system.
“He has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to public service and zeal for the continuous improvement of our justice system. For his many years of dedicated service to the legal profession and his enduring work to improve Ohio’s judicial system,” the Ohio State Bar Association said.
A former Ohio Bar President from 2012-2013, Fischer (pictured above) is in his second term on the state’s high court. Fischer began his first six-year term on the Supreme Court of Ohio on January 1, 2017, following his election in November 2016. Previously, he was elected to serve as a judge on the Ohio First District Court of Appeals in 2010 and was re-elected in 2012.
Fischer started his law career serving as a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge William Bertelsman; he then joined the Keating Muething and Klekamp law firm in 1987. They later promoted him to partner in the trial department only four years later. He holds a Texas law license as well, despite being inactive.
He formerly served on the board of governors, the budget and headquarters committee, and a number of other committees and task groups for the Ohio State Bar Association as well as in the House of Delegates. Additionally, Fischer served on the Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program board for two full years. In addition, he served on many committees, and his peers selected him to serve as president of the Cincinnati Bar Association from 2006 to 2007.
Fischer has practiced law for nearly 40 years and graduated with honors from Harvard Law School and Harvard College.
Fischer calls himself an “experienced and respected” conservative who will continue to improve Ohio’s justice system.
“I unabashedly believe in the goodness of the bench and bar working together to make the justice system better in every way, and have worked with that attitude my entire legal career and will continue to do so,” he said.
The Ohio State Bar Association awards the Ohio Bar Medal once per year, with the first awarded in 1966.
