A newly-elected U.S. Senator from Georgia is under investigation for his ties to a nonprofit that may have committed voter fraud, according to the state’s election officials.
U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) is a respondent in a potential case against The New Georgia Project, which has been referred to prosecutors according to several reports.
“The New Georgia Project, which bills itself as a nonpartisan effort to register voters, is accused of submitting 1,268 voter registration applications after the 10-day deadline to do so,” one of those reports says.
Warnock was listed as the CEO of the group when the alleged fraud occurred, but the group reportedly said his real position was chairman of the board. Warnock resigned from the group upon his election to the U.S. Senate in January. The group’s founder is Stacey Abrams, Georgia’s former gubernatorial candidate who is expected to run against Gov. Brian Kemp (D) again in 2022.
Embattled Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) said this is one of 35 cases of potential voter fraud being referred to state or local prosecutors.
“Election fraud is not tolerated in Georgia. When there is evidence of it, the people responsible face prosecution,” Raffensperger reportedly said. “Georgia has multiple safeguards in place that allow our team of investigators to discover fraudulent voting. They worked to catch the wrongdoing in these cases, and they maintain the security of Georgia elections.”
In recent months, Raffensperger vigorously defended the state’s voter integrity and election security, after it was called into question by former president Donald Trump and his allies.
Questions from the 2020 election cycle in Georgia, many posed by The Georgia Star News, still remain unanswered.
For example, chain of custody documents were never produced for most of the 600,000 absentee ballots dropped in drop boxes around the state on November 3, according to a report by The Star News. This is a violation of the state’s own election rules.
The Star News also reported that tens of thousands of absentee drop box ballots in Cobb County were not immediately delivered to election officials upon pickup, as is required by election code.
Raffensperger’s office conducted a vote audit of absentee ballots in Cobb County in an attempt to prove that the results of the election were reliable, but that recount was largely done behind closed doors. The Star News reached out to Raffensperger’s office for clarity on the process, but never received a response.
