General Motors announced Friday that it is adding more than 1,200 new jobs at its Lansing-based factories to help with the production of mid-size SUVs and two new Cadillac sedans.
The Lansing Grand River plant will add a second shift resulting in 400 new employees while the Lansing Delta Township plant will add a third shift and 800 new employees.
“We are excited to provide these opportunities in Lansing,” Phil Kienle, vice president of GM North American Manufacturing and Labor Relations, said in a press release. “Our team members have proven experience in building high-quality vehicles and are well-prepared to meet the needs of our customers. This is great news for our manufacturing sites as well as the Lansing community.”
The company said it has invested more than $1 billion into Lansing manufacturing operations since 2015, including a $36 million investment in the Lansing Delta Township plant last year.
The two additional shifts will start working in the second quarter of 2020 – sometime between April and June.
According to the Associated Press, employees who have been laid off from other GM factories will have first dibs on the new positions.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took credit for the additional jobs in a statement released Friday, touting the fact that 12,000 new auto-manufacturing jobs have been added during her term.
“This is great news for our hardworking UAW members, their families, and the entire Lansing community,” she said.
“Everyone knows the best vehicles on the road are made by the industry’s best workforce right here in Michigan. From the $300 million investment in the Orion Assembly plant to the $2.2 billion in the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, we are excited about the future of manufacturing in Michigan,” Whitmer continued. “We are making strides every single day to cement Michigan’s status as a world leader in mobility, and we will continue to work with our partners to keep our foot on the gas.”
