A three year old was shot in Minneapolis over the weekend. In video footage obtained from a security camera, dozens of shots were being fired in a Minneapolis neighborhood, ending in a three year old child being hit in the leg. Due to the volume of blood he was losing it was obvious that his injuries were very serious. In order to save the child’s life, Minneapolis police officers applied a tourniquet and drove him to the hospital themselves.
According to FOX 9, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said in a statement, “We have an epidemic right now of gun violence particularly in the African-American community, and that must stop.”
The boy is expected to pull through. This is the fifth child that has been hit by gunfire in Minneapolis, two of which have died. As was reported on The Minnesota Sun, “prominent government officials have made no official statement regarding the violence that sent La’Davionne (10), Trinity (9), and Aniya (6) to the hospital in critical condition.” Aniya and Trinity have since died and La’Davionne remains hospitalized and in serious condition. Another child, a nine-month-old baby, shot on July 2, had non-life threatening injuries.
Residents have been upset over the lack of government action to address the growing issue of violence. Hold the Line Minnesota has condemned Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in the past for his silence regarding the violence, particularly against children, saying “those same emotions [experienced regarding the death of George Floyd] seem to not exist when it comes to three kids being shot in the head, killing one and leaving two fighting for their lives.”
