President Trump has pointed to several female judges — including a Michigan judge — to fill the seat of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to an interview he gave on Fox News’s “Fox & Friends.”
Ginsburg passed away on Friday at age 87. She had served on the U.S Supreme Court for 27 years and was championed as a solid liberal vote.
Trump said on “Fox & Friends” that his shortlist includes 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett; 11th Circuit Judge Barbara Lagoa; 4th Circuit Judge Allison Jones Rushing and 6th Circuit Judge Joan Larsen and that he plans to announce his pick for nominee by the end of the week.
“I think it will be on Friday or Saturday and we want to pay respect, it looks like we will have services on Thursday or Friday, as I understand it, and I think we should, with all due respect for Justice Ginsburg, wait for services to be over,” Trump said.
Larson, 51, has previously served on the Michigan Supreme Court and was a University of Michigan faculty member before she was appointed to the circuit court in 2017, according to Fox News. She received the L. Hart Wright Award for Excellence in Teaching and specializes in constitutional law, criminal procedure, statutory interpretation, and presidential power in the classroom. She graduated at the top of her class from Northwestern University School of Law and regularly contributed to The Federalist Society, Fox News said.
Larson was also a former law clerk for the late Justice Antonin Scalia and for Hon. David B. Sentelle of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Trump’s shortlist also reportedly included former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert Young, but he has since said that he is inclined to choose a woman to fill Ginsburg’s seat.
“It will be a woman, a very talented, very brilliant woman,” Trump said during campaign rally on Saturday night, according to CNN. “I haven’t chosen yet, but we have numerous women on the list.”
