President-elect Donald Trump announced Monday that his son, Donald Trump Jr., and other “various representatives” will be traveling to Greenland this week amid his ongoing interest in the U.S. purchase of the country.
“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are “MAGA.” My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights. Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
Trump made the announcement along with a video of a Greenlander wearing a red Make America Great Again hat who urged the president-elect to purchase the country as he and other Greenlanders “don’t want to be colonized by the Danish government anymore.”’
“Buy us…Buy Greenland…We get ripped every year about our minerals from Greenland. We are the richest nation in the world and we don’t get to use it. Denmark’s using us too much,” the man in the video said.
If the U.S. were to purchase Greenland, Trump said, “We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World.”
“MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN,” Trump added.
Fox News Digital reports that Trump Jr. is traveling to Greenland in a “personal capacity” and will not be meeting with any government officials or political figures.
“As someone who has traveled to some fascinating places across the globe as an outdoorsman, I’m excited to stop into Greenland for a little bit of fun this week,” Trump Jr. told the outlet.
As the world’s largest island, Greenland is a North American island autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
While Greenland has been attempted to be purchased by the U.S. for decades, Trump revived the idea in 2019 during his first presidential term, confirming media reports at the time that he was interested in purchasing the territory, specifically citing the territory’s access to natural resources.
Trump again called for the U.S. purchase of Greenland last month as he named PayPal co-founder Ken Howery to be ambassador to Denmark.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump said.
