Commentary: Time to Defend Our Border from All Enemies, Foreign and Domestic

“Fox & Friends” reported on Sunday morning that a “small army of migrants [is] marching toward the United States.”

The UK’s Daily Mail also reports “An army of a thousand migrants from Central America are marching through Mexico to the US where they hope to get in by any means – legal or not.” And the UK outlet reports, “the number is only growing,” and “So far no one in Mexico has tried to stop them.”

What does a normal country do when its border and sovereignty are threatened by a hostile army? It sends troops to defend its border, and in some cases, it may even interdict the hostile army before it can breach the border.

This is the situation the United States finds itself in today as a hostile army, variously estimated at one to two thousand – and growing – is crossing Mexico headed toward the United States – and they are not merely a ragtag mob, they are organized.

According to the Daily Mail the group has committees devoted to food, security and logistics. CNN reports they are being guided by an organization known as “Pueblo Sin Fronteras,” or People Without Borders, the annual journey is made up of migrants who say they plan to seek asylum in the United States.

According to other media reports this year marks the fifth Pueblo Sin Fronteras caravan.

The invading force began crossing into Mexico last Sunday with the stated intention of illegally entering the United States.

Images of the army post by the Daily Mail show thousands filling streets in processions, often chanting as they walk and sometimes carrying signs that say, ‘We’re all America’ and ‘No to the Discrimination’.

And the invading army is well organized. The Daily Mail reports it is divided into groups of 10 to 15 people, with a leader heading each group. Five groups make up a sector.

Think the traditional military organization of squad, platoon and company and you have the idea.

Alex Mensing of Pueblo Sin Fronteras told CNN that the migrants plan to turn themselves in and request asylum once they make it to the US border.

This is a common practice for Central Americans coming to the United States, who, according to CNN, often present themselves at ports of entry and then are taken into custody. Those who make it to the United States rarely succeed in winning asylum.

However, their cases can take years to make their way through the backlogged system and this time lag allows them to further complicate their deportation by producing “anchor babies” who then have birthright citizenship according to current U.S. law.

Reports from the road posted by the UK’s Daily Mail indicate that Mexican authorities have been abandoning border checkpoints to let the group travel unimpeded and that locals are helping the caravan along the way, donating food and water.

Fox on Sunday featured an interview with National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd, who accused Mexican officials of helping the migrants get to the US border and called for activists helping the migrants to face prosecution in the United States.

The Daily Mail also reports that as of Sunday, the group had already made it more than 140 miles north to the city of Matias Romero, mostly by walking. The group plans to hold demonstrations in Puebla, Mexico on April 5-9 before continuing on to the U.S., where they plan to demand asylum.

Demand asylum?

President Trump has weighed in via Twitter, tweeting:

Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. NEED WALL!

Tweeting is great politics, but the President can and must do more.

Back in 2006 President George W. Bush sent 6,000 National Guard troops to the border, and in 2014 Texas Governor Rick Perry deployed the Texas National Guard to the border. However, on previous border deployments, National Guard soldiers have served only in support roles — administrative, intelligence gathering, etc.

Deploying troops to the border should not be a problem, given that some troops already participate in counter-drug operations on the border, though they don’t have arrest powers reported Washington’s WTOP radio.

If Mexico won’t enforce its own immigration laws, then there is only one answer to this invasion, and that is to send the United States military to the border to defend our sovereignty, and to arrest and prosecute any American or foreign national who can be proven to be assisting this invasion.

As Commander-in-Chief President Trump can send more troops to the U.S. – Mexico border to protect our sovereignty and repel any invading army. Individual troopers could also be sworn as law enforcement officers and given necessary arrest powers, if such powers were not deemed to be inherent in their mission. The bully pulpit of Twitter has its place, but now the President should stop tweeting and start using his constitutional power to defend our border.
